Spokane. Wash., April 20. After it
had reached almost the highest point
in the Rocky mountain, the Oriental
Limited No. 2, which Is the Great
Northern's fastest passenger train east
bound, struck a landslide, demolishing
the engine and derailing a car. The
wreckage caught fire immediately after
the accident, and every car, excepting
the last two. a standard sleeper an
an observation car were destroyed. All
the passengers aiid members of the
tram crew escaped injury.

formation of the fleet as It steams Into

but will be in the harbor before the
arrival of the battleships and will Ho
off Belvedere while the ' battleships
ateam In. When the last of the battle
ships haa passed Nortl Beach and is
crossing the cllr front, the cruisers
will fall In behind and take the po

The combined Atlantic and Pacific
fleets will occupy that position during

Harlan, formerly chief of the special
service division of ths general land
office, testified in the Henson-Hyde
land fraud trial today that on various
occasions between 1898 and 1902 he
had received money from Frederick A.
Benson for information concerning the
creation of forest reserves and for help
in expediting the applications for land
sent to his offloe by Benson.
Tho witness said that when he met
Benson in Washington in 1898 that the
latter explained that he was Interested
in certain land and that he waited to
make arrangements to get claims
throua-h the land office. He satd ar
rangements were made whereby he was
to reoelvo 20 per cent of the value of
each acre entered by Benson, and that
Benson agTeed to pay him in currency
because drafts and notes were "danger
ous." ,
At that time, - Harlan said, Beilson
told him that he had no Partner): that
he formerly was connected with Hyde's
office, .but was not then on friendly
terms with him. The witness then de
scribed how he had received different
sums from 1898 to' 1902 and then de
clared that in June. 1902, . he wrote
Benson, telling him that the secretary
of the Interior and the commissioner
of the general land office had both re
ceived letters from an Attorney named
Zabriske of Arisona, complaining that
Hyde and Benson engaged In fraudu
lent transactions' and referring to
Schneider, one of tho men now under
indictment,, as a man from .whom in
formation could bo obtained. .
