Fire Damages at Multnomah
Mill Amount to Two
Thousand.
Two firemen were Injured and a se
vere prqperty loss Inflicted by a fire
that started at 8:60 o'clock yesterday
morning in the dry kilns of the Multno
mah Mill 4b Construction company, at
East Seventh and East Madlaon streets.
Ths building and contents were almost
wholly destroyed. . ,

firemen who were holding It. The high
water pressure In the nose caused It
to snap and twist like the lash of a
whip and before It could be secured the
broken noszle struck Frank Slaughter
and J. Monto of truck No. 4, knocking
them down. Slaughter's nose was broken
and his eye blacked by the blow.
Monto's injuries were less serious
Ths fire started In the dry kiln from
the overheating of one of the furnaces.
An alarm was turned In from box 212,
but the flames spread with such rapid
ity that by the time the fire department
arrived on the scene the whole Interior
of the extensive klln which were filled
with lumber, was ablaae. Stream after
stream of water was turned Into the
biasing structure, but little more could
be done than to eonflne the fire to the
dry kilns. It was an hour after the
rire started nerore ail aanger or a
snread of the flames was past and ths
crowd of several thousand per none who
had been attracted to the spot began to
disperse.
The mill company estimates its loss
at between 82,000 and 33,000.

with having swindled a tourist In Brit
ish Columbia out of 31.440 last Novem
ber. Dondero was arrested in San
Francisco by the police of that city on
descriptions sent out by the provincial
government. He Is known to the police
authorities of various cities throughout
this country and Canada as a clever
bunko artist who has secured thousands
of dollars by means of what is known
as the "valise and empty pocketbook
game."

three months show a gain of 6,161 cars,
or an average of 82 cars a day more
