The Willamette Improvement associa tion, at Its meeting Friday night took active measures for the improvement of Greeley street. A decided preference for bltullthlo paving was manifested. Strong resolutions condemnatory of the Portland General Electric company for their discriminating practices were adopted; the action of Mayor Lane re garding the five-year lighting contract being strongly Indorsed. D. V. Hart of University Park was Indorsed for the Republican nomination for county com missioner and a committee appointed to further his candidacy. Five fat capons that were hanging over the sidewalk a few Inches from the building line brought about the ar rest last evening of Harry Wood, pro prletor of the market at First and Alder streets. The Inanimate fowls were not to blame, of course, but Patrolman Ad ams inougnt tne proprietor had vio lated the ordinance regulating the dis play of wares beyond the building line. 'lhe arrest created eomethlnr of a ripple among the crowd of shoppers and the comments that were made anent the arrest were not wholly complimentary 10 im representative or law and order, Mr. Wood accompanied the officer to the police atatlon, where he deposited a check for $25 to lnaure his appear ance In the police court Monday morn ing to answer to tne charge preferred against him. He says he propoaes to show that discrimination haa been hown In this Instance, and that other merchants are permitted to make a el. play of . goods on the sidewalk In front of their places of business, and that they are not molested. There are several markets In the lm mediate vicinity of Wood's place of business and a great amount of rivalry is displayed in the-matter of attracting customers. It Is Intimated that this may be the cause of the complaint made in this instance for a trivial and technical Infraction of the ordinance. Save Money Avoid Pain!
