I ' , i ' ' - I PUPILS s AT WOODLAWN LIVES IN DANGER SCHOOL Inadequate Fire Protection Leaves Children in Jeopardy in Case of Conflagration Business Men's Com mittee Finds Startling Conditions. The committee of the Men's club of 1 Wood lawn Methodist Episcopal church, Which was appointed to investigate the condition of the, Woodlawn school rela tive to Are protection, finds In It re . port that the Woodlawn school aa it , stands la abaolutely unfit for occupancy. The committee, which waa composed of O. H. nosers. James QrlfHth. C. M Poley, William Newman and Louis E. 'Joy, asks that the old building be re moved at once and a new brick or ce- ment bulldlnc erected In Its place. The romm1ftp recommends that here laftfr all the sohool buildings of the (city shall be made of brick or cement. 'and wiai tne city ao away entirely wun the system of hot-air heating, which la Ifo'ind to ba a menace. The full text of .the committees report is as rouows: f Bad Conditions Kola. f "The full committee visited tha 'school Tuesday mornlnx, March 10. la pectin all parts of both tha old and mew buildings under the guidance of principal Newell, and find the following authority. - aprcino objections to existing- condi tions: f irat Tha amokeplpe from the fur race In tne basement ol the new build dng tiasaes within three and three quar iter inches of woodwork, the heat at woma time having been sufficient to (blister the paint and draw tha pitch. L "Becond This sraokeplpe Is entirely Ithln tha fanroom, which Is taken off from tha furnace-room by frame parti -tlons, Is entirely Inclosed and kept locked. Tha switchboard for the eleo trlo wiring of tha. building Is also lo cated In this room. - Tha objection to thia arrangement la twofold. In that it hides from quick detection an Incipient fire, and plaoee tha moat probable cauaea of flra where tha forced circulation of air would quickly spread it to all parts of tka building through tha hot-air pipes. , "Third Tha switchboard consist of a piece or aaoaatoa fastened to toe wooden partition, while the requirement dlnary use, and because It is eight feat above the ground and unprovided with outside steps. In a- flra drill test It wss demonstrated that tha emptying of tho old building through ' the one exit re quired 44 per cent more time than tha emptying of tha new building through two exits. It would scarcely be prac ticable to use thia exit for fire drill pur poses without outside steps, but It ought certainly to be available la case of emergency. "Seventh The fire alarm In tha old building can only be sounded from the top rioor or the new ounoing or rrom the steps of the old. This Is a very In efficient arrangement in view of the fact that the most probable origin of fire Is in the basement of the new building. We are Informed thut a rem edy has been promised by the electrician ror the school board. "Eiahth There are no flra escaDes on either the old or the new building. We believe that these should be provided without delay. Their efficiency as a Ufa savins means Is beyond any ques tlon of argument and tha failure to provide them would seem to amount to gross negligence oa tne part or tnosa in 'Ninth Tha healing and ventilating pipes or tne new building are not xuiiy equipped wun aampers ana cui-orra Tills should be remedied In order to cut off all draughts ot air from tha base ment to other parts of tha building In case or rire. Brick or Concrete Beaded. "In addition to tha faulty conditions above enumerated, your committee be lieves that It Is entirely feasible for the city of i'ortiana to provide in future " TTTTTI VT TJT 'T . t . n i j Kit n . !
