A regular Course dinner for 7 cents la the latest thing that charity workers hart devised for the poor of New Tork"s ' Ghetto. ; The scheme Is unique In that . all the food served Is In accordance with the "kosher" standard; that Is, , according to the religious requirements of the orthodox Jews. It was found . that-hundreds of unemployed could not . avail themselves of the numerous ' "bread lines" scattered throughout the city because there they did not serve ' kosher food. The new 7-cent dinner will not only be prepared with due re ' card for the religious demands of the Jewish people, but will also assure them of a, good square meal of soup, , meat and vegetables at a very low fig ., tire. Jewish girls from well-to-do fam ilies In the neighborhood have con sented to serve as waitresses. The signs that decorate the walls are unique. Among them aref "Don't- waste any time eating, for there are hungry ones waiting." "Don't - crowd or push, for very one will be waited on in turn, "Don't shout at the waiters, for they are not dear. space about the pupils, which gased steadily ahead. They were two hard, relentless orbs staring out of nothing. Just one look, the lantern dropped and the burglar fled. Everything In tho store window, which was that of an optical company, was left Intact, al though there were several thousand dollars' worth of things within the burglar's reach. Everything was siife, however. Including the two lonely glass eyes, staring straight ahead fr,om the black velvet of the window base. - In one of the publlo schools of Brook' lyn there is a little girl of 10 years who has been in this country but three months and now reads and speaks Eng lish with almost as much ease as some "of her classmate who were born m America, Minna Weisbeln Is a Russian by birth, and besides sneaking English, which she has ploked up in a few weeks, she has alx other languages at her command Russian, Polish, German, Spanish and Italian. Whan Minna waa a baby her father was In favor with the cxar, but trouble came and he was obliged to flee for his life. T,he' family . then wandered in different countries, and before they bad been there many months Minna was able to converse with any of the natives. In December last they came aa -.-steerage passengers to America, aad attention was attracted to the family because of tiny Minna's ability to converse in several languages. Robert Watrhorn, commissioner of im migration, declares that Minna Is the most remarkable child that has ever coma to America. ' It is no bed of roses that Is handed "Out in these days to the army of unem ployed who apply for a square meal and a lodging to the Charity Organization society. Just by way of testing an ap plicant's sincerity he is made to saw ' and spilt one eighth of a cord of wood and after he accomplishes this the so ciety is convinced that he really wanted ' a. meal and a place to sleep. He gets both. If ha Is a married man and lives at borne he gets 60 cents for his work, . but If he has no home he gets a ticket :. that entitles him to a lodging and a meal. - This distinction Is made be cause the man without a home would In all probability spend his money in . a. saloon. The society conducts a big wood yard, which permits of about 250 applicants getting work dally. How ever, owing to tho business depression fully seven hundred apply every day. . The wood is sold at the prices charged by the local companies. A daring burglar broke the plate glass show window of a Harlem store early the other morning and flashed in his lantern, but there his daring stopped. Tho rays fell .upon two staring eyes. The whites showed for a considerable In order to break down the barriers between "society" and the working peo ple, and in order to Insure to the latter better labor conditions, a number of New York women of social prominence, including Miss Anne Morgan, daughter of J. Plerpont Morgan, and Mrs. J. Bor den Harrlman, met recently to form an organisation of those willing to go into factories, to eat, sleep and work with the working girls. The object Is to enable these women to offer valuable suggestions for reform latlon and supervision. ure of the undertaking, however, Is that the remedies aimed at will be realised by exerting pressure through private in fluence on the Individual men and firms that allow abuses to continue in their workshops. The society does not In tend in any way to- duplicate the work of the factory inspectors. Already many of the leaders In Gotham s smart set have signified their Intention of un dergoing some or tne narcismps mat working girls experience, in order that they may be better fitted to undertake tne woric or rerorm. miss Morgan nas already visited the dangerous glass fac tories and at the same time studied the home conditions of the employes. a tea, to which Brian was Invited, and another waits rehearsal took place. The crusade against unnecessary noises In the city has been properly enough under the leadership of Mrs. Rice, wife of Professor I. W. Rice, the noted Chess player. The Rices have their home on the fashionable Riverside Drive and one of the greatest sources of complaint has been against the unnec essary tooting of whistles on the boats that ply up and down the Hudson all night long. However, so sensitive to noises are both Professor and Mrs. Rice that the professor had an absolutely soundproof chessroom constructed un derneath his house. It was hewn out of solid rock, and was an Ideal place for a chess match. A number of the International chess tournaments were held there. A unique feat-j 'Having shot at The waiter you tip In any of the fashionable restaurants along Fifth avenue or Broadway is a club member. That Is, he Is a club member if he Is a good waiter, otherwise the Geneva asso ciation won't elect him to membership. In order to be considered eligible to this exclusive organization a waiter must know several languages and the whole gamut of purveying fine food In a su perfine way. For the past week the members have been on their best be havior, for the association has been looking for the Ideal waiter to repre sent the American branch of the or ganization at the coming annual con vention, which is to take place at Dres den, Germany, next month. Only the real beau Ideal is to be chosen and all of the waiters In Manhattan have been closely inspected. The association Is international in us Bcope and has for its object the betterment of the serving claas. It conducts also an employment bureau, and holds lectures on cooking and service. The "Merry Widow" has been a great theatrical success In New York this winter, and now the waltz which has made that comic opera famous has be come the rage among society folk. The dance is such a strenuous affair that when one accomplishes all of Its Intricacies he will have no further use for a gymnasium. Although they don't advertise the fact, some of the mem bers of the "four hundred" have taken up the dance In order to reduce their weight. It Is more effective than diet ing or treatment and much pleasanter. Donald Brain, who takes the part of the prince In the Merry Widow, was in vited to the Vanderbllt home recently. where, arter the tea was over, they all tried the waltz. Brian showed them some of the difficult steps In the dance that they had not acquired. A little later Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney gave an elephant," he says. "I. sat by while J he great slabs of skin were removed from the gigantic sides and the carriers, hastily summoned from the camp and reenforced by people from a neighboring village, proceeded to cut up the vast mountain of flesh. "Almost Immediately a shadow flitted across the carcass, and looking upward one became aware that the deep blue above was rapidly filling with countless black wheeling specks. "The buzzards, kites and scapulated crows boldly alighted on the grass and on a few neighboring bushes ami awaited calmly the moment when we should take our leave, while overhead at a great height the shyer varieties. Including the marabous, large bare necked vultures, and screaming fishing eagles continued to hover. "At length all the meat was carefully apportioned, the tusks chopped out and we started for camp, but bVfore we had marched 20 yards every one of those waiting birds was settled upon the re mains, while with a rush like the roar of a war rocket the greater vultures fell, with wings tightly folded, from a height of 300 or 400 yards to take part in the feast. "The startling noise made tiv these hesvy birds falling head foremost through the air, to check their plunge with outspread wings so close to the tround as to make destruction innur no vi table, was most singular an A 1m. presslve." silver, J5H1; bank rate, I per cent. ; Hew York, March II. TAYLOR, The Leading Specialist MY SPECIAL, TREATMENT 1 1 The methods I devised over twenty-five years ago for treating men's diseases proved a radical step in medical science. Those methods have enabled me to cure diseases that were formerly regarded as incurable. In working out my methods I held the theory that "WEAKNESS," for instance, was not a constitutional or functional ailment, but a pros tatic affection, and therefore, merely local I reasoned that its con stitutional effects were simply the results of a tremendous waste of energy due to inflammation of the prostatic gland; that this being true, a local treatment could alone effect a cure. Thereupon I devised the treatment I employ today with such marked success. Indeed, I have never known this treatment to fail to effect a complete and permanent cure in a comparatively short time. . My treatment for other diseases peculiar to men are also along original lines and are equally successful. Hence I reiterate that no man need be WEAK or AILING. My Special Treatment Is an open a . .. . . . m.m I door to vigor ana an tne pleasures mat oeiong 10 penect neaitn. Anv man may avail himself of my services. It has been and ie my life's work to aid afflicted men, alleviate their sufferings and restore them to health and vigor. I have therefore placed the charge for my services within the easy reach of any roan, no matter what his circumstances. To PROVE my confidence in the results of my treatment, and as an act df good faith, I WILL WAIT FOR IIY FEE UNTIL TOD ASE CURED No man can be fairer than .that. I take all the risk. You take none whatever. You have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose. SEEK EXPERT MEDICAL AID NOW Men whose vitality is exhausted, those who have some private dis ease or weakness lurking in their system, and who are prematurely old. while still young in years broken down wrecks of what they ought to be, and who want to be strong, and to feel as vigorous as they did be fore they wasted their strength, to enjoy life again, to win back the vim, vigor and vitality lost, should consult with me before it is too late. My Direct-Method Treatment Offers a Positive Cure For Every Ailing Nan I Cure "Weakness" "Weakness" is not a nervous disorder, demanding a tonic system of treatment, but is merely a symptom of chronic inflammation or conges tion in the prostate gland. This condition exists as a result of early dissipation or some improperly treated contracted disorder, and requires carefully directed local measures only. By my own original methods the prostate gland is quickly restored to its normal state, which results it mil and complete return of strength for the functional disorder is entirely removed, and I am convinced that by no treatment other than my own carefully directed local measures is' a radical cure of this ailmentpossible.
