As a result of the new rule requiring

The rara at the Intersection come
very fast and close together. They nr;

The business men wish to have the

Ernest Laldlaw, Portland representa
tive of Frank Waterhouse & Co.. made
the announcement this morning, and
there ia ft strong probability of the lln
efa making occasional calls here In the
future If .-the experiment now being
made proves satisfactory. -'
Some months ago the Australian Mail
line began Operations with five steam
ers, the Boverlo. Foreric, Teddo, Aeon
and Inverlc, and regular sailing dates
are maintained out of San Francisco
after the steamers have called at Puget
sound for part cargoes. It now appears
that it will be profitable to add Port
land to the route, although for a starter
the liners will only call hero aa freight
offers. . '
The Boverlo is ft large steamer with
capacity for approximately 7,000 tons of
freight. She Is now on the way to San
Francisco from Australia with a cargo
of coal. Arter aiscnarging me coai, tne
Steamer will proceed to Puget sound to
take on whatever ireigm awaits ner ana
then she will come here to load. From
here she will return to the Bay City to
finish up with general cargo.
Mr. Latdlaw says the line is steadily
gaining patronage and a very good ser
vice Is maintains with the vessels now
on the route. More will be added, how
ever, as business increases.
The lumber for the Boveric will be
furnished by local mills. Australia ha
bought large quantities of lumber dur
ing the past few months, as a result of
inviting quotations.

detained a couple of days because of
a few loss obstructing the passage-way.
Captain Lemaitre says he has hunted

"There are a few logs lodged against
the pier of tha brldae and so located
that they block tha passageway through
