X X will endeavor In the following dla eourae to annwer'aa near aa poaalble ' th above Question. Before going; Into details, however, I ' would like to refer to the elementary principle which !i today at the bottom : Of aJl successful effort. Thla prlritlpl la unity of action to ancure me tat possible reaulta In the moat effective and economical manner. The commercial condition! of a large city often confront ua with disadvan tage or lacg or systematic adjustment ' of prevailing abuaea, and where the ef ". forts of the individual merchant ceases ' to be effective it becomes tne amy ana "; prerogative of an Institution auch aa a board or trade to take up tne reina ana ' endeavor to adjuat those drawhacka aa they become apparent from time to time. la a Trad Orator. A board of trade la a trade center ' and emporium for the cryatallzatlon and the aeatmllatlon of commercial Infor mation., , primarily th dutlea Involving on a board of trade are to foster and care for the apecial Interests represent ed by ita membership; yet an organiza tion of thla kind should be euually mindful of the general needa of our cur, state ana country. When the present plans are thorough ' !y understood It will become a dally custom for members to aaaemble on the floor of the exchange, particularly so between the hours of 11 and 1. to affect , transactions in egga, butter, cheese, poultry, grain, flour, hay. seed, pro vision, country produce, lumber, real estate, coal and various other lines and to arrange for freights, marine and fire insurance. Investments, etc. Committees will look after the mar ket quotations of each branch of activ ity and the Exchange will be provided with telegraphic market Information covering domestic and foreign markets relating to breadstuff, provisions and livestock. Prices to Be Posted. Local market quotations will be dally posted in accordance with tha decision of their respective committees, at 12 o'clock noon, and will be accepted as the official quotations for that day. It Is hoped that the newspapers and others will quote these reports In their publications. In thla connection It may he stated that auch quotations undoubt edly will reflect the market more cor rectly than it la possible today. Daily local quotations will be posted Tn the blackboard of the exchange on the following commodltlea: Butter, cheese, poultry, eggs, cattle, sheep, hogs, hops, wool, hides, furs, wheat, oats, bar ler flour mlllatuffs cereal foods corn, hay, domestic fruits, tropical fruits, root vegetablea. onions, potatoes, rice, coffea, salmon, sugar, nuts, salt, beans, bacon,-hams and canned meats. Quota tions Of the New York stock exchange -Will also he furnlahed. Appropriate rules for conducting the regulation of trade operations and obli gations incident thereto, are now being framed to meet the requirements of the different branches of commerce. Such rules, and other facilities will become promotive of tha Interests of the com mission merchants, exporters. Jobbers, traders, manufacturers. Investors, and inunj ulnars. t a, X I' Will Inspect and Orad. As buslneaa grows, departments for the Inspecting, grading and weighing of different commodltlea, such as eggs, butter, cheese, grain, hay seeds, etc.. will be added. The general objects and purposes of a board of trade are con cisely covered by the following groups of functions: To maintain a commercial exchange; to provide uniformity in the customa and usages of merchants: to Inculcate principles of Justice ana equity In trade to facilitate the sDcedy adjustment of business disputes; to acquire and to disseminate valuable commercial and economic Information: to secure to Ita member the benefits of cooperation In the furtherance of their legitimate pur suits: to secure uniformity in commer cial laws and customs, and to promote equitable principles. It can easily be surmised that by a proper application of concentrated en ergy and Intelligence the board of trade will become a factor In the aucceaaful aolvlng of even the most difficult prob lems. In fact every effort of the board will tend to stimulate the expansion of the trade and commerce pf our CUy. Concrete was redis covered, the art of making it relearned, the skill of adapting it reemployed. Today, you have to admit that its equal was never known. The biggest and best buildings of the century are being made of Concrete. This has developed an enormous demand. Not a Concrete manufacturing company in the world lacks for work.
