The teachers of th Astoria publio achool are talk ing of striking on account of the school board failing to grant the Increase In wages in accordance with the two-mill levy made for that purpose at' the re cent annunl meeting of the taxpayers of the district A rew days ago the tacnrs were about to walk out. in a body but pauaed, thinking their certificates wer In danger or forfeit, in commenting on the difficulty the Oregon Teachers Monthly In the current issue, says: "The teachers of Astoria ore prepar ing to vacate their positions in the schools at that place, until the matter of salari'-s can be satisfactorily ad lusted. The cause of the trouble be tween (he teachers and school board is the continued delay in the increase of salaries. A petition from the tuxpayers representing two thirds of the taxable property In th district was prcsnntea to the board asking that the teachers' salaries be raised, and then at the regu lar school meeting the taxpayers voted a special levy for this purpose, but th board still refuses to make the raise. Th teachers feel that they have ex hausted every other means In their power to get the raise that the people want them to hav, so now they are preparing to act as a body In the matter and go on a strike, lor tma la wnat it will amount to. Ve believe the teach er of Oregon ougrlit to stand by the AstoiM teachers and reruns to accep Dositions in those schools, until th matter Is properly and satisfactorily settled. We are not much In fuvor of strikes, as they usually do more harm than good to the strikers, but In this case, it seems the only way to get Jus tice. Wehop that Astoria, teachers will get their salaries Increased, since It Is evidently the wish of the taxpayers that they should.
