J9 Burnflid ;st sear Fifth, v New Tork i Parson Iikes Great TOM Yay arid T' i Would Share Glorjv New Torki Feb. 4.;The curate of "Bt Augustine's church, In - Eaat Houston street, the Rev. Daniel Hugh Verder, la ambltloua to write a musical comedy that' will hit Broadway straight between the eyes and give him a lower i berth along with George Cohan, Irvln Cobra Hill Irwin's brother Wallace, Harry a Smith and Qeorae V. Hobart In "Jfrme'a Twentieth Century Limited." Young Mr. Verder likes the life of tne auey. ana has a pretty weii-devei-oped hunch that he can give It original expression. The fact Is. lie has written already quite a bunch of lyrics and iignt, merry little verses wMcn wouia. he says, fit nicely in the libretto of a musical piece. He doesn't see any rea son why a curate shouldn't produce a musical comeay. -So far the Shuberts, Klaw A Erlanger, Dillingham and Frohman haven't both ered Mr. Verder with Insistent requests that he get a move on and .turn out a laugh-maker before Lent puts a damper on the theatrical business, but wait a bit. Maybe they haven't read his . book of poems, "The Snow Bride," or bis latest lyric, "The Great White. Way." At any rate, aa Mr. Verder say, . he is willing to go alow, always with a hand ful of salt to spill on the tall of that coy bird, "Success," If it should flirt its wings anywhere near him. The other night Mr. Verder went to the Casino and heard Iron Hand, the boy usher, beat his hands into a pulp when Maude Fulton skipped out and sang; the newest Broadway song. Whereupon Mr. Verder got an idea. He would write a Broadway song that would be a bigger smash than "The Troubles of Workln' Gel." but It wouldn't be so light-minded and frivolous. It would be amusing, but not too merry, full of a deeper note, containing a hint of the darker side of the alley a contraat, in short, of the gaiety and the gloom of Broadway. At the same time It might serve as the nucleus for the musical comedy he had In mind. So he dashed off "The Great White Way," one verse of which runs: No monks nor cowls nor any such thing But steady burns the electric light. No shadows does the darkness bring, but like the day Is the livelong nla-ht. Oh, the Great White Way Is always gay. It Is, Indeed, a wonderful sight. Of course, if a piece is a hit snd the audience splits Its gloves and calls for more, there'll have to be additional verses. Knows Xast Bids Zdfe. As a curate of 8L Augustine's, Mr. Verder is familiar with the life of the east side, and is convinced, so he stated today, that there is much good material there for the right sort of man to bring out in the form of stage entertainment, drama or musical comedy. "I have written what I call, 'songs from the slums,' " said Mr. Verder, diffi dently; "but the opus is not nearly com pleted. 1 have finished only about 100 verses. They deal with the life of the submerged, their Joys and sorrows, their toll and tbelr amusements." It should be stated that Mr. Verder, while in college he Is a graduate of Trinity, '99 wrote many sonnets, and is the author, in his riper art, of "Love's Unrest.'' How Cold' SO Degrees of Frost. Is. From the Dundee Advertiser. It Is diffioult for us to form any Conception of the degree of cold repre sented by the 80 degrees of frost re corded rrom certain parts or Kussia. Sir Leopold McClfntock tells how in one of his Arctic expeditions a sailor was foolish enough to do some outdoor work at precisely this temperature. His hands frose, and when he rushed Into the cabin and plunged one of them Into a basin of water so cold was the hand that tbe water was Instantly converted Into a block of Ice. At . 25 degrees.
