HI! BY: THE LATE PANIC f iPortlander" Returns "From Southland With' Gloomy' Story of Conditions. Mexico la feeling the effects of the flnanolal flurry that swept over the states and business Is dull and money scarce. The copper mines of the west coaat, reputed to be the largest in the world, are closed down waiting for a healthier tone In the metal market. Such in effect are the finding of B. T. Williams of E. T. Williams & Co.. lumber dealera, who has Just returned from an extended tour of Mexico. Ne vada, Utah and Arlaona. He also found very flokle weather, 4artlcularly in Ariaona, wnere tne mercury waa ouay either crowding Into the bulb of the thermometer or trying to push through the top of the tube. Mr. Williams found the weather study ao Interesting that he secured a copy of a summary of last . year's weather report compiled By E. L. Wet more, a rancher on the Rllllto, near Tucson. During- the year the minimum temperature was 20 degrees on Decem ber 20, while 117 was the maximum on July 3, In February the temperature waa particularly unsettled. On the morning of the ninth it was just one degree above freeslng and by noon the thermometer ahowed 86 In the shade. In reference to the mlnea of Mexico, Mr. Williams says everything is prac tically at a. standstill, which meana mat they are not buying any lumber at pres ent. Portland haa been shipping large quantltlea of mining timbers and ma terial for railroad construction during the neat several years, but under ex isting conditions Mr. Williams says the outlook is anything but encouraging. "Mexico depends upon American pros perity," aaid Mr. Williams, "and hence the flurry here put a atop to lnduatry In that country. Railroad construction haa csaaed except under old contracts, and the copper mines lie dormant 1 spent moat of my visit In Ouaymas, on the west coast It Is a tropical place, even at this time of year.' The mine ownera are waiting for a healthier tone In the copper market and in the mean time they are resting on their osrs." ' Mr. Williams' trip waa one principally for recreation, although of late he has shipped several million feet of lumber Into Guaymaa for the railroads and mines. y. f.i. c. a. it Program and Election Will Be Held Tonight at the White Temple. The wool of the Willamette valley is pro nounced by experts to contain more life than the best me Argentine, aub trallan or English Ilocxa can produce. "This Is due to the mild winters during which the sheep can live in the open pasture practically all the time. Where they have to live for weeks at a time In close sheds the wool will show it. Another factor is the variety of green feed always at hand mat puts lire in me product. "If we can Ket stockmen with money to give the Willamette valley the prop er trial I thoroughly believe we win astonish the world in the quality of wool we can produce. Not only are the wool growera certain that the Wil lamette valley la most xavoraoiev 10 iiroduplnsr wool but also are the wool manufacturers who have looked Into the matter.
