It will be remembered that the wooden Structure which this magnlfl - cent ' akyacraper aupereeded, waa known by the same name. The transition Is such as every resident would wish to see take place on sev 'eral other down-town Corners. This 10 story steel structure Is one of the moat modern and fireproof office buildings on the coast. Money has not been spared to erect a building of the most approved type. Its en trance on Morrison street Is orna mented with two massive grranlt-j columns, and the halls and corridors are wainscoted with white marble. . Anions' the anany noteworthy feat ures Is the elevator system, which Is of the Ohio Traction type, like that Installed In the Blnger building In New York City. It has the first express elevator Installed in Port land, which travels at a speed of 600 feet per minute, its first stop being t th eighth floor. The entire building li heated" by a vacuum system of direct steam heat ing, by means of which steam is mads to circulate at a pressure be low that of the atmosphere and the temperature of any Individual room can be controlled independently. This, however, is not the only ad vantage of the vacuum system, which waa installed by the W. O. McPhor son company, for by Its use exhaust ' steam Trom the engines operating the electrio plant In the basement may be utilized for heating the build ing, with little if any back pressure on the engines, which always results In a consequent waste of power. The banking rooms of the Security Savings & Trust company, located on the first floor of the building, are properly warmed and ventilated by a fan system, the operation of which Is as follows: Fresh air is drawn from the out door down through a vertical brick shaft to the basement, wherein sre located - a fan and other apparatus ALL THE Metal Sash and ScrccnWork of the Corbett building was ex ecuted by J. This is accomplished by passing the air through a fine cloud of water and thence through what la termed an. eliminator, water being forced through pray nozziea, ao conairuciea as 10 completely atomize It The same water Is used over and over again, being pumped up from the settling tank by means of an electrically driven centrifugal pump, then forced through the aforesaid nozsles. the operation being continuous. The water after passing through the air washer - is warmed to a temperature of 70 degrees, tMs temperature being maintained automatically by the thermostat, and is then forced by the fan through the heatlns- colla proper passing successively tnrougn the mixing dampers, ducts and reg isters Into the rooms to be ventil ated. The temperature of the sir entering the rooms is constant in volume, and being regulated by an automatic temperature regulator, re duces the steam consumption to a minimum. Four air escapes through ornamental concealed outlets in the ceiling of the rooms ventilated, pass ing into the foul air shaft to the out doors. A vacuum cleaning system of the most approved type was also In stalled, and this, by means of special appliances collects all the dust and dirt from the floors, walls, carpets. upholsteries, draperies, etc., and ex- nauBia hub uirt liliv a imill located In the basement, by which it I de Sosited into water and passes out irough the sewer. Every officeln the building Is sup plied with compressed air, for the operation of dentists' and doctors' drills and other Instruments. This compressed air Is supplied by an air compressor of a special type, also located In the basement The barber shop and Turkish bath establishment which will be lo- Js PoKvka fe? Co. The boiler room In the basement likewise has another Independent plant furnishing air for forced draft for the boilers, and ventilation for the engineer's room. The electrical fixtures of the build have been pronounced by critics is the finest in every detail found In the city. They were installed by the Western Electric works, who also did all the wiring of the build- . F?1 Put " the switch- boards and generators. In case both of the Independent generators, either one of which will carry the entire building, falls to act there is a stor age battery to fall back upon whloh will run elevators and light tha en tire building for seven hours. The fireproof doors, and the metal and screen work were turned out of the shops of the J. C. Bayer company, and reflect much credit upon the manufacturing Industry of Portland. The general appearance of the building Is greatly enhanced by the artistic and uniform lettering upon the windows and doors of the struc ture. The work was promptly exe cuted by Elmer J. Wallace, the well known designer of art signs and oiijce letterings! Ths1 painting of the exterior and the, , deeoration of interior was the work of Butcllffe & Blled. The tint ing and interior decorating is a de cided work of art, simple, rich and effective. The above picture reflects the dis tinctive and towering appearance of the new Multnomah block, which is certain to be caught by the camera whenever the finest buildings of Portland are taken. fie I" ..'
