Oakland. Jan. 19. Tha policy of re trenchment on the part of the South ern Paclflo company continues, until now there have been about 1,000 man thrown out Of employment at least temporarily, alnce December. About Christmas time. It was announced at the yards that something like S00 men had been laid off. including carmen, paint- era.j machinists, Carpenters, etc., but it was stated at the time that these were to I resume work again on January z. However, these men are- still unem ployed, and sine then the company has continued to lay orr men until at least 1,000 are out, including riremen, brake- men, engineers, switchmen, etc. The number of trains operated has also been reduced materially and the impression prevails that there Is some motive more important than mere re trenchment behind the move of the past two monins. Even tha Standard Oil special freight train haa been cut orr, despite the pro test of that corporation, and where heretofore trains pulled Into the West Oakland yards at the rate of one every twenty minutes, tney arrive now one about every five hours. And instead of trains of forty cars the trains are made un of at least eighty. At tne same time me oania ra w (apedal Dlspatsh to Tbe Joarasl.) Baiem. or., Jan. 19.
