The metamorphosl from the dignity of long trousers to the ease of kilts Is pleasing thing to contemplate. You start In and are somewhat peeved to think that you have been taken In bv a children's play and that you ar too old to have a connected remembrance of your Mother Goose. in the next it minute you bearln to aay, with a warming of the wrinkle of your heart. "My. what a nice Dlav for children this would be." Ten minutes later, when the Falrv Queen comes dancing out, It'a all over. There la no lonrer any dissection of sensations. All you really think about la that it'a a nice play for you. And It Is a aood comedy, with brlgrht and original lines, snappy action, ex ceptionally good principals, more hu mor than most shows even dream about, and some of th prettiest song sung In the Helllg this season. Tea and th aonas ar well aunsr. It doesn't sound probable, of course. It is asking too much of any one to believe It But , Mabel Day. who 1 th Masl Bon Bon of th play, ha a rather ex ceptional voice -a very clear and very weet socrano of more than uaual rana and power. She's a frail looking girl and you wonaer wnere ail me voice comes from, but It la there and It la real muato. The Gingerbread Man" is a musical hodge-podge, with much good nonaense In It, a lot of opportunities for the larire If not handsome collection of chorus girls to dance and pirouette about and for the principals to snow how entertalnlns- thev can be. Fred J. Nice Is the Gingerbread Man and Is very good In the part Uls com ing to Ufa in the confectioners window is excellent and his contortionist acts are remarkable. James McElhorn is very, funny as the Good Fairy. He Is a statuesque male, garbed In a blond wig, pink tights and pink pallet skirts, so he wouldn't have to do anything to make his audience laugh. But he re cites and dances and has a funny shop- FORECAST; COLDER WE HANDLE THE BEST , COALS ONLY v Per ton Welsh Anthracite .. ..S 14.00 Wallsend i.. . ; $10.50 Richmond $10.50 Rock Swings ..... .$10.50 Sneddon .. Percy Matson Is a good an actor as one sees nowadays his Simple Simon waa really remarkable work. It Is not an overly important part but bis facial expression throughout is exceptionally good. Ross Snow Is amusing an Won drous Wise, while the fleeting glimpse one secures of Fannie Boutelle, the Moon Girl, makes one want to see more of her. . . As for the music, "The Beautiful Land of Bon Bon." which every one knows, Is a gracefully and enchantingly tuneful melody; Mr. Nice's song, "John Dough," is good, and the Moon song In the second act Is exceptionally pretty. It was marred, however, by the unfor tunate hanginr of the drops, which pre vented those in the balcony and . kal ' lrv from unainc the moon and the alrl Inasmuch as the management had of its own free-, will transformed us into children, we behaved like children. Those of the audience who were u stairs howled and shrieked and whlntlel Those who were down stairs hissed and yelled, The presence of a few police men might hav restored the nursery to a comparatively decent order by a lib eral spanking all around. For the sake of the well-mannered young people who mav attend future nerformances, it is to be hoped that the drops will be ele vaied or the moon lowered. "The Gingerbread Man" will play to night, tomorrow afternoon and tomor row night. It Is the best musical com edy that has been shown in Portland for some time ana deserves patronage. 2L " HOWARD M'TYtt mWE, iv M0YT3 A- anILlS WHITE nji&KTYnZDAKZK-.fi AT THE THEATEES u fi "Gingerbread Man" "at Helllg. Aa the effeminate fop Mr. Bowlea was almost perfection. The Play rives the nunlls of the dra matic acnooi an unrivaled opportunity to show off. which thev do with mora or less success. Miss Fay Balnter is funny and her mannerisms are effective. Charles Lewis la rather nalnful. The others had friends In the audience who were doubtless interested in their work. "Milk White Flag" at Baker. That Miss Marion Barney isn't abso lutely friendless so far as Baker audi ences are concerned waa pretty well demonstrated yesterday afternoon when upon several occasions during the per formance of A MUK White nag," the leading woman was given ovations that ?aust have been balm ror any wounded eelings that may have resulted from last week's happenings. They cheered and applauded until she had to ask them to aton naii a oosen times. . ' It was entirely, of course, a demon stration of the regard - in which they hold her. The part of Aurora Luc tn th Hoyt farce Isn't one to elicit any particular enthusiasm, vou know. Neith er waa ner singing or -Ana tne weeping Willow Wept" But Miss Barney looked particularly stunning in her widow's weeds, and beauty in dlstresa is a pow erful thing for anyone, even a theatrical manager, to cope with. tM wnenever tno mends or tne leaamg man and woman agreed to it all pro- ppea wnue miss .Bar- Webb, especially Miss ceedlngs were Btor ney ana Mr. Barney, bowed their thanks from tags. the , as ror tne piay itself which really was of secondary Interest it went off very- well and some laughable and very 8ood comedy work was done by Mr. leaaon, Mr, Dills, Mr. Russell and Mr. Bowles. In Us conception the farce, like most of Hoyt's, Is dellclously satirical. . It was a good Idea but of course wa dropped far abort of ful f Uhrient In order that the Incidentals might be Introduced. Mr. Dills as the corpse was funny, and his work was as conscientious ana perfect, am usual. MrvGleasoii was also very good aa the undertaker, while James Gleaaon'a band master waa th best .thine s don tor soma tint, "Moonshine King" at Star. Th Moonshine King and all hi court hold high revelry at the Star this week. They opened the nroceedina-s yesterday afternoon with a fusillade of musketry and th crackling of small arms, and tne noise and the shouting were cumu latlve. Captain Preston Is the un crowned monarch of th moonshiner s gang and the part was right royally played by George Berry.. St. George Daglenn plays the part of a rustic swain with ardor, and Dorothy Davis is the charming daughter of the moon shiner, with whom the rustic Is in love. Frank Seaward tilavs a tramn co median. Charles Connors and Leah La, 'oree nave it all their own way so far as comedv Is concerned while Kath leen Taylor trips about enchantingly aa the untamed child of nature. Two well-pleased audiences ftyled the house laai nugni ana yesterday aiiernoon. "Big Hearted Jim" at Empire. ' "Little minds are Interested In the extraordinary-great minds In the com monplace," according to Fra Elbertus, and the name la probably true of hearts If that of "Big Hearted Jim." which Is playing at the Empire this week, can be accepted as a criterion. It must be acknowledged that Jim finds his inter est centered In some painfully com monplace men and women. Jim Is sher iff of Medicine Lodge, Montana and has a great time of t He has all the virtues that the most unsophisticated might ask for and displays them all th time. Henry J. Jackson plays the part of tha blar-hearted one. Bertha Julian is Dora Carlyle, th schoolma'am, and there are a number of other capable people in the company. There Is a treat aeai or-excltement, some snoot na, a little love-making, more ha tin u. and some uproarious farcical humor. "Bis- Hearted Jim" will be at th Em pire tnrougn tne weeic.
