" . , The latest news we have from our own agent describes harvest work as proceeding satisfactorily, with good : weather. Estimates of the wheat, sur plus are Showing a tendency to Increase. The new wheat has already commenced to arrive at the ports and shipments are expected to increase soon. K Tv. f: W;:: vf r India, 1 ' ; We hear that clouds have appeared In one important district of the Punjab, but otherwise the situation shows no change. It Is certain ' that the winter rains must come very soon now If there . Is to be any substantial increase in the wneat acreage, for it Is not usual to expect any seemngs of this crop after the middle of January, even In the late uorcnera gist nets, we again hear oy mail that; the outlook In Bengal and the central provinces Is fair, but these -rat D i small ngure compared with the big crops usually grown in the Pun jab and united provinces. : " t y ":.-: ': Australia, . Chartering to load the new wheat crop ' proceeds slowly, but still the list of boats now numbers some 20 sailers and steamers.--.. .-M-Tltussia, The weather lately has been very se vere generally and as, the snow cove? has been deficient it is needless to say that the crop outlook Is no better Fresh arrivals at the ports are extraor dinarily scarce and it really looki as if , before the spring, ,the export trade may come to 1 a ' dead stoo. unless there is - some Increase in supplies soon. St.. Petersburg sends advices dsted J2d Inst., of a biz snowstorm in the northwest and an- i other in the Black Sea, which extended over the lower parts of the Crimea. ' ,A;B.- V SO We hear from Bucharest of a drifting snowstorm followed by not very -vers frost, while 8ullna reports 1 de- fwi front f ahrenhelt and the Danube lull of drift ice.--,- As far as present utiiproeats g the closing of the Danube ' W1I4 not make much difference, for Su JitiH 1ms a stock of sbout 6,000,009 ' bu!hln, which will provide material for ln:s,lncsn during several-, weeks, but ofr tu prtng and summer the outlook Is 'prjii lack,- for good authorities main tkin tbar the country in about cleaned as tit as wheat is concerned. And, although crop reports so far cannot be called really pessimistic, yet our Braila correspondent says the crop has. had the worst start he remembers during an experienoe or 27 years, and 11 is wen known that a good harvest is seldom or never obtained from a bad seeding. The truth of this was abundantly ver ified by results from the last spring crop or Russia , Anstrla-Xangarla. " . Extremely cold weather was exper lenced last week and the hard frost must have subjected the young wheat plants to a sevsre test, unles they were safe under a good cover of snow, and of this so far we have bad.no word. '. rnaoa. . The frost last week was very severe. via, 80 degrees fahrenheit, and, although numerous fans of snow occurred, yet they did not cover the fields as farmers would have liked. It cannot be said there are any definite or serious com plaints about the crop, but still farmers are a little anxious about the safety of the last seeding. Latest country markets have ruled quiet, but the recent advance of d to d per quarter has been maintained. ' Oermany. Severe frost, without snow, was also experienced last week in this grower, and this weather naturally was not re garded as favorable for the crops, but of course any damage will not be re vealed till spring. It may be remem bered that very similar weather was experienced last season, that Is, a hard frost occurred suadenly when the crops had no snow cover, and we need hardly say that very serious crop damage was subsequently revealed. Supplies of na tive wheat are not much In evidence; Indeed, we are informed that In the south, they are coming to an end, and it is very certain that much Argentine wheat is wanted and has been already purchased. A handsome buck deer landed on Ston- Ington Point Tuesday, having swam half a mile across Stonlngton harbor from wamphassett Point, where a herd of deer has lately been seen. The buck first encountered the sea wall that stretches along the waterfront south of the old breakwater, but managed to find a breach near the extreme end of the point through which he scrambled to a vacant lot near the house of Mrs. Frank Joseph. . The deer caught sight of the crowd as he came ashore and to escape capture leaped with great agility a seven-foot ricket . fence separating the shore from he narrow htahway that leads to the government reservation at the end of the noint. This broueht him to the five-foot wall in-front of the old light house, which obstacle ne also surmount ed with graceful ease, bounding o the shore on the east side of the point, where he again-took to the water in the direction of Sandy Point. . - - - Sandy Point Is ths extreme tip of the state or nnooe isisna, . woming up northerly from Nspatree and inclosing Little Narrasansett bay.
