The differences that have sprung up
between tne different sections are dy
ing down gradually and it la thought
there will be no bad effects on this
score In the future, as all the growers
realise the foolishness of these petty
jealousies. .......

EVERETT STARR DIES
Well Known Stock Broker
Died Suddenly at His
Home Last Night.
Everett C. Starr, the well-known
broker, died of typhoid pneumonia at
10:30 last evening at his home at 656
Flanders street. Mr. 8tarr had been
critically 111 for several days. Yester
day he became unconscious. Last night
he rallied slightly, regaining conscious
ness for a short time, but realizing his
condition he said farewell to his wife
and brother, who were at his bedside.
Mr. Starr was not quite 80 years old,
and although not a Portland boy by
birth, had made this his home ever since
he came here from Victoria, British Co
lumbia. 10 years ago. He had been a
very prosperous and popular broker and
capitalist and for three years prior to
July last, was vice-president of the firm
of Overbeck, Starr & Cooke company,
stock brokers, with offices In the
Couch building. Since that time he had
been conducting independent capitalistic
operations. Two years ago he married
Mlas Marloa Crane at Council Bluffs,
Iowa. He has two brothers in the
brokerage business here. Claude D.
Starr and Louis M. Starr, and two other
brothers in 8an Francisco.
The funeral services will be held at
the home of his wife's sister, Mrs. Wll
lliim W. Peaslee, 394 Ross street.

following the insurance scandal, had
safely blown over, Richard A. McCurdy,
former president of the Mutual Life In
surance company, accompanied by his
wife, son and daughter-in-law, today
returned to the United States on taa
steamer Hamburg.
McCurdy left for Europe at the begin
ning of the investigation and today is
the first, time he has returned since
then. It was the general lmpresaion at
the time that he went abroad to avoid
any subpoena that might be issued for
him to testify. , . r

time that Mr. Tuttle was forced to
"cough up," at the point of a six
shooter, and It waa not a hold up, either,
Mr. Tutus la a mechanic. He has a
small family and makes good wages,
but nevertheless, it Is alleged, was in
debt to several Rainier merchants to
the amount of $200 to $300. A few
evenings sgo he boarded the stumer
Haasalo at midnight. It is -nlJ, with his
family and some cssb. His departure
thus waa disputed, however, by Rush
Farrla, one of his creditors, woo. It is
said, at the point of a gun forced htrn
to pay over to him $80, and also about
$30 to another creditor present, Mrs. J.
Lows. All the rest of his alleged cred
itors were asleep at the time, so he got
off with. It Is supposed, about $200.
Tuttle was drawing $7 a day.
