Mr. Hand's manner of testifying and the way In which he stated his facta will greatly influence the councllmen ki their decision. After hearing all the wllnonnpn Conboy was given notice that he would be given a chance to be heard later and the first hearina came to a clone. At the rate of hearing Conboy's case the remaining- cases will take about a month. A mass of testimony Is to be heard on both sides although It Is be lieved summary action will be taken In one or two cases despite the expres sion of the councllmen. that all saloon-j Keepers will be given a fair hearing. Daniel C. Lew- Is, who says his real name is Levi, and who claims to be a mining engineer from Idaho, waa placed under arrest yesterday by Captain Auble of the po lice department on complaint of two women who claim that he has been per secuting them for soma time. A lot of blank checks were found on Lewis last night, it Is said, and the police say that Lewis may be wanted elsewhere. If not he may be sent to the police court charged with vagrancy, or his case may be taken up by the postal authorities, the police say. Mrs. Beatrice McKlnney, widow of a lumber man of Portland, Oregon, and her sister. Mrs. Mildred Shallenburger, wife of a business roan of St. Louis, are the women who caused the arrest of Lewis. Mrs. McKlnney states that she first met Lewis on a train while en route from Portland to Los Anseles. Lewis called on Mrs. McKlnney several times and first seemed very agreeable. Later, she says, she refused to marry him, and when she refused to see him any more he became troublesome.
