Or. WHOLESA LE CROCKERY AND GLASS- ware. Or. Ocean City, N. J., Jan. II. Four men . went fishing at Carson's Inlet recently and caught a whale. It waa aot a glaut whale, measuring just., a trifle mora than 20 feet, but it waa a sperm whale, ,' has a commercial value and It put up a beautiful flhC-i:-;-: '. -t-t.rs Corson's Inlet- Is opposite tbo lower end of the island that Ocean City la built on, and it Is popularly known be cause there la good fishing In summer. gooa auca nunung in winter ana rea sonably good grog all the year round. Few whales visit Corson's Inlet and Alloway M. Smith of tbla place got a bit excited when ho saw the whale sun ninr Itself on a bar. Ho called William O. Crothers. - ' William G," said he, "I fear I see ' a leviathan." Then the Consul tatlo a. ' ' William G. gave a low whistle ' an callei into consultation Jacob Horn and William McDanleL They agreed that a real, live whale was In their community and must not be allowed to get a way. A lo-horsepower motor boat was stirred Into motion, hawsers and boat hooks were assembled, and the whale hunters set forth. Then Jacob Horn, being a conserva tive sailor, suggested that they had better g back for a rifle. In caso tho -whale should rudely decline to be cap tured. The rifle was procured and a fresh start made. Approaching from the leeward, as Is customary In whalo hunting, the boat got within a few feet of the sleeping whale. A shot was fired Into his layers of fat The whale never stirred. Threo more shots, and still no sign of Irrita tion. At the fifth shot the whale began to ' take notice. A column of blood and water shot Into the air to a height of ' 10 feet The whale rolled over toward . deeper water. This whale did not lash his tall Just then, which explains why Crothers ami Horn managed to get a three-quarter Inch rope around the tall. Tho other end of the rope was made fast to tbo stern of tho boat and the crew started for home. They did not go far; theyM. hesitated, and when tho whalo - had made up his mind as to what ho In tended to do, the whole outfit started out to sea. . .. The whale hunters dropped anchor. The anchor gave up trying to hold tho whale and stayed at the bottom, whllo the boat swept on majestically. Ac cording to Mr. McDanlel, light here Is where the whale did lash Its tall; like wise It churned the water lnta null ' of foam flecked with blood. Keeps Pumping Ballets. , All the time Crothers was pumping bullets Into the whale, and this finally ; won out. for the monster grew tired. It , was a fight of more than three hours before the huge catch was unsble to re- ' slst the powerboat and was towed In to the pier at Corson's Inlet. lsven then ne was not aeao, ana aa the ammunition was exhausted, tho whale hunters called for volunteers, a . hawser was passed around the whale's ; head and he was held under water until . he drowned. The whale Is now on tho beach at Corson's Inlet and the trolley and rail- ; road have done a big business carrying; passengers to view the carcass. - William G. Crothers told all how tho whale was caught. " "What a pity it didn't come around when the summer crowd was here," said ' William G.
