University of . Oregon Eugene, - Jan, 11 A great deal of discussion is being caused throughout th university over the agreement entered Into, by commit tees representing Oregon Agricultural college and Oregon providing that the annual football game between the Insti tutions shall be played at Portland In future. t ' In th current number of the Oregon the caption,- "An Unwise Move," which shows th attitude of a majority of the students. The editorial in part iouows: "The strongest argument in lavor or the game being played in tne metropo lis Is from a commercial and financial standpoint. The enormous amount of money seeurea py sucn a same lor Doin institutions would fill the treasuries Of the associated students with such an abundance of money that other student enterprises could be admirably sup ported. Such a fact can not be denied. But th a am aa now played alternately at Eugene and Corvallls nets each team .yearly approximately 11.000, which is a sufficient sum to help pay the runnln expenses of th season. The frame as It now stands is of sufficient nducemnt to make up all deficits. To have an Ideal in football, such as the commercial ideal. Is contrary to the very intention of college athletics. Such a tendency is a policy which will bring on evils that will ultimately lead to the abolishment of the game. "Not only is the financial objection alone, but in playing the game away from- the college town, college spirit would soon be at a minimum. When ever athletic contests are held away from the college campus, they soon lose their whoiesomeness ana degenerate into the various -forms of profes sional sport The old time college rivalry will disappear. "Our educational Institutions cannot afford to let their athletics degenerate into such an amusement. Such a gain would tend to kill the wholesome, keen, rival spirit which manifested Itself so efectually in the game Just past with the O. A. C. team. ' "Students of both Institutions would be at a great expense In Portland and naturally, a rreat falling off In the number of student attendance would be evident. The people of the college town want the game In their city, and espe cially the enterprising citizens of Eu gene who have so loyally supported us In our undertaking." If the athletic council decides to ac cept this agreement only one champlon- nip game win do piayea nere eacn ear. Next year this will be with Washington and the year following with Idaho. fil'FAn BEATS -HIS FIRST EASTERNER Chicago Boy Demonstrates Superiority Over the New York Lad in Boston. This Is a sample of the hot shot poured into the element which la con trolling atnietio anrairs in the north west association by Kdward E. Morgan of the Multnomah club this morning. Morgan is prepared to prove that both Inglis and McDonald are professionals of the worst sort, and that neither is a member of an amateur athletic organi sation. "Inglis Is particularly dangerous to the amateur standing of athletlo or ganisations in the northwest from tne fact that ne is chairman or tne regis tratlon committee and can say whether or not any man can secure admittance to the association," continued Morgan. "Aa chairman of this committee he has granted permission to the Sullivan brothers of Butte, who are out and out professional prizefighters, to box under tne colors or tne nposane Ainieuc ciud. He has also violated other amatour ethics while occupying the position of secretary and treasurer or the y. im. a. "Inglis is not a member of any ath letlo club in the association and I need no better proof than his own confession. He was not entitled to a place In the deliberations of the directors of the as sociation and secured his office by Tam many' methods. Tom McDonald, the former University of Washington ath lete, helped inglis to become the ar biter of the P. N. A. Znglls In By Artifice. Inglis secured his positions by arti fice. He got hold of a number of prox ies and so did McDonald. At tho ap pointed time McDonald sprung the Uni versity of Washington proxies and the Seattle Athletic i-lutvs. McDonald la professional football and track coach. and besides took part In some profes sional wrestling matches. 'Multnomah club proposes to see that such 'amateurs' as Intrlls and McDonald are weeded out of tne Paclflo North west association. We shall, at the next meeting of our board of directors, send a communication to President Gold smith, asking that he call a special ses sion at his earliest convenient. We shall then go Into the meeting and ex pose the methods of the professional element and make it so hot for them that they will be glad to withdraw. 'Multnomah club stands for all that pure In amateur athletics and we nrnnoHft still further to nernetuate this position. We believe that the adher ents of amateur athletics in the 8e- ittle Athletics club, the Spokane Ath etlc club, the Vancouver Athletic club, tnd the University of Washington will stand by us. IN FOR CENSURE Support of Bingham Criti cised in Itself and for What It Implies. (Special Dispatch to The Journal.) Salem, Or., Jan. 15. Congressman Hawley Is coming In for some censure on account of the Republican mlxup over the nomination of Schuebcl. It Is recalled that Hawley made his greatest hit with the voters by his urgont de mand that the Oregon & California Railroad company be compelled in the courts to surrender Its land grants In Oregon. He made this an issue In the primary and at the election and since election, and his recent recommendation of George O. Bingham, a life-long at torney or the Harrlman lines, whose 4,000,000 acres of lands arc to be wrest ed from them by process in the federal courts, Is pointed out as an Inconsist ency. it is claimed for Bingham that he has been only, the company's local attor ney, and as district attorney he would probably be entirely controlled by de partmental orders and would have no power of initiative In the una Iter. The division In Republican lines Is over the direct primary system, as the Schuebel supporters are nearly all for the direct nominating system, while Bingham sup porters are anti-Bourne and antl-prl-mary people. Mr. Bingham's aDinty as an attorney Is not auestioned. but the criticism of his, appointment is based solely on his close connection with the Southern Pa clflo and his close relations with some of the prominent defendants in land fraud cases. Ho was counsel for A. T. Kelliher and was one of the bondsmen of George W. Davis, tho defaulting school land clerk, by whom the state lost about -$30,000. It Is believed by Republicans here that a new man iwlll be taken up unless Schuebel is confirmed. Do You Enjoy Jour Heals? While his : missionary work among the. youngsters of the city was productive of much : good, be said, the people generally railed 1 to enthuse over it. At any rate, accord ing to Mr. Snyder, they did not support it. t "This town is the limit," declared he, at the end of a week's work among the boys of the city, during which he claims to have exacted the pledge from most of the boys to abstain from cigar ette smoking.
