MERCHANTS GETS IN ETO AP P Increases Capital Stock and Arranges for Large Ke ' serve Fund. ACTURE LAUGHS A meeting of the stockholders of the Merchants National bank will be held January 14, when the stock books will be open for additional subscriptions to Increase the paid up capital to 1600,000. If the necessary amount Is not put in at this meeting outside capital will be Invited. Increase of the capital stock and the placing of a large reserve fund in the bank's vaults are the first requisites demanded by the comptroller of the currency before the bank can be reopenod. It Is said collections of funds due the bank are being carried on with good success and that arrangements for re opening are progressing satisfactorily. Barker,' president of the Peninsular Lumber company, and prominently Identified with the lumber ing Interests of the northwest, died on the train yesterday, near" Green River Junction, while on a trip to Wisconsin and Michigan, where he has large lum ber "and saw milling interests. He was accompanied on his eastern trip by his son. William C. Barker, who will arrive hre tomorrow with the remains. Besides a son, Mr. BarKTer leaves widow and two unmarried daughters. He was about 60 years old and had but recently made Portland his home. Moy attorneys maae tne unusual plea that their client is anxious to face his accusers, but as he is -a wealthy merchant, does not want to suffer the Ignominy of being taken back by an officer. - They said that If given the opportunity Moy would gladly pay his own way and hasten back to Chicago to answer the charge or murder.
