United States government engineer! have submitted a report to the war do partment showing that a hlfh-grade Portland fcemcnt can be manufactured for use In constructing- the Panama ca naLof rnaterlala found on the Isthmus of Panama, and within a few miles of the line of the canal. The report further aaya that cement can be manufactured In the canal one for 11.14 per barrel; and when It la considered that S. 000,000 barrels la the atlmated quantity that will be used on the canal, and that It will coat not leaa than it a barrel delivered on the lath nue if ahlpped from the atatea, It will be seen that the government stands to save several million dollars by using; ,remnt made from materials found Wtin the canal lone. borne time ago Ernest Howe, assist ant geologist of the United Hlates geo logical survey, was detailed by the ca nal commission to look into the geol ogy of rook a. etc., which might be use ful In connection with making Portland cement and the securing of aggregates for making concrete. Plenty of Material. . Mr. Howe worked over the ground for a considerable time, and made an ex haustive report dealing with the sub ject. His conclusion was that the coral rocks near Colon, together with the silt jght down the Chagres river could bjrougfi 1 8. a i ,'.1.. r it 1 II I UH i t it ii it ibia If 1 II II 11E1V. f U -J JL I 0 111 , ..4 asaaiM!3 ;,rift.,r.V.V..ilaa MaaiiM .. lift' zty . From these three materials cement waa made experimentally In the Lehigh Valley Testing laboratory at Allentown Pennsylvania, and tne cement ao tnaao alleged to be or first-clans quality WE HAVE BEEN IN THE STEAM HEATING BUSI NESS JUST A YEAR But we want you to read some letters we get. The report gives the amount of raw material, which. It states, la available and amply sufficient to make the 6,000, 000 barrels of cement reijulred for the canal construction. For fuel, coal from the I'nlted Statns, oil or lignites are proposed. The cost of building a plant having a minimum capacity of 1,000, 000 barrels a year Is said to be 11.500,- 000 from which cement "The plant is working entirely satisfactor ily and has excited considerable favorable -ek comment, and I will be glad to refer any body contemplating installing a heating plant to you." SUCCESSFUL? WELL, ASK ANYONE The w. g. Mcpherson co. 328 Glisan St. Healing Engineers It i stated, can be made at Jl 31 per barrel. In case the canal commission should not care -to go Into the manufacture of cement, private capital might be en listed and Induced to put up the neces sary plant for Its manufacture. In that event, the government might have to pay as much an $2 a barrel, but even l sen a saving of II a barrel, or a total saving of IS. Ooo.ooo would be effected. Save Cost of Packages. Another mutter which has much Inter ested the cement manufacturers of the United States, has been the Investiga tion which Mr. Shlnn has been carrying on at the suggestion of Colonel William 1j. Hlebert. head of the department or lock and "dam construction of the canal commission, as to the question of de livery to the commission of clinker In stead of cement. The purpose was to save the cost of packages, which Is es timated at least iQ cents per barrel of cement and, further, to avoid tlie stor age of the large quantities of cement under the peculiar atmospherical condi tions that prevail upon the Isthmus. As to this, various manufacturers were re quested to consider the proposition of supplying cement delivered at the ports on the Atlantic and Pacific side of the Panama canal. In the form of clinker In bulk, with the understanding that the government would erect a grinding and finishing mill on the isthmiis for the purpose of preparing the lllnker for final use m Portland cement on the work. Ttie suggestion Was a most In teresting one. and received careful con sideration from the manufacturers, in volving, as it did. the selling of prac tically a half-flnlshed product and also the transportation to tidewater in cars, and to Panama in vessels, of clinker in stead of cement. The canal commission expects, in a short time, to invite proposals on every probable basis upon which cement man ufacturers might desire to make bids for furnishing cement needed In the con structlon of the canal. It is thought feasible to ship the cement in clinker form to the Isthmus, and grind It there and bids can be made on that basils as well as others tnat may tie named in the specifications. About 4,500,000 bar rels of cement will be needed and the consumption will be at the rate of about 4,500 barrels per day. Oregon City Lodge Com pletes Handsome Three Story Structure.
