Meany of the Unlveralty of Michigan,
who is compiling the historical data of
tha northwest and of Alaska, has been
presented by Major-Oeneral A. W.
Greely with all the published reports
of former commanders of the depart
ment of the Columbia. The records
cover all military activities In the
northwest end in Alaska since 187$, and
include reports of the Nes Perce cam
paign of that year, the Bannock war
of 1879, the Chinese riots on Piiget
sound tn 188 and the mining troubles
In the Coeur d'Alenea In 1892.
Among the commandants who mada
reports are Nelson A. Miles, In 1881-4,
then a brigadier-general; Brigadier-
General E, S. Otis of Philippines fame,
who waa In command In the north
west during 184-; Major-Oeneral Wil
liam A. Shafter, who conducted the San
tiago campaign and waa In charge in
1899 and 100. and Briradler-General
Frederick Funston. tbe man whe cap
tured Agulnaldo, and commanded tha
department of the Columbia In 1I0S-4.
The reports of these men are of great
historical value.
General Greely has also granted pr-
laalon to the Waahlngton State His
torical society to copy all tha manu
scripts and records kept at Vancouver
barracka. These records date back to
he founding of the post In the early
fifties, when U. S. Grant wss a lieuten
ant and assistant quartermaster there.
