Jacques W. Keaway, F. R. G. S.. geog rapher, of Mount Vernon, New York, who was a newspaper reporter in Port land 30 years ago, arrived at the Hotel Portland this morning. Beginning next Monday Mr. Keaway will deliver a se ries of lectures before the teachers' In stitute. Mr. Redway is one of the best known geographers In the country, and has writtear several books on the subject. One of them, and perhaps the best known, is "A New Basis of Geography." The sale of this publication averages 1,000,000 copies every year. After his career of mora tnan a year as a cub reporter In Portland, Mr. Red way went to California, where he be came instructor or cnemisiry in tne uni versity Of California. Afterward he traveled extensively in South America, Europe and Asia and other countries for the purposo of geography study. When the olvil war broke out two of Mr. Redway's brothers enlisted In tho cqnfederaey and were killed. He lived in Tennessee at tnat time. .During the war he went to Chicago as a refugee, and then drifted went and landed In Portland. First he tried his Iiand at mining, but didn't do verywell. Later he entered the services of Bon Holllday's overland company. Bor some time he acted as a special messenger carrying dispatches out of Portland for Mie south. Mr. Keaway was covering tne legisla ture for tha Oregonlan at Salem at tho time of the eneounter between W.- H. ' Watkinds.' warden of tha penitentiary. and Sylvester Pennoyer. who afterward, became governor of Oregon. mc.
