Carr, mayor of Hermiston, Umatilla county. Is In Portland on a flying business trip. He speaks en thusiastically of the future of his town. which Is headquarters for the govern ment force engaged In the big Umatilla Irrigation project, by means of which 20,000 acres of land will be brought un der the plow. "It is expected that about 7.000 acres of this land will be ready for settle ment In January," said Mayor Carr. "Several miles of privately owned can als will be turned Into this system. Water la to be diverted from the Uma tilla river by a canal 27 miles long, the point of diversion being about three fourths of a mile from Kcho. "The big reservoir included In the ! project Is at Cold Spring. It will be I one of the largest earthen dama la the United States, 90 feet high and 4,000 feet long. When once filled it will hold water sufficient for Irrigating the en tire 20,000 acres without replenishing. "The town of Hermiston Is growing remarkably fast. Although we have only about 360 people, twenty-five houses are planned for erection within the next s.xty days. Already we have a two-story brick department store, and a warehouse soon to be built for feed tuffs will be L'00x200 feet. The prop erty owners are preparing to lay two miles of sidewalks, in addition to one and one-half miles already down. Our principal streets are to be macadamized, too. We have just one grievance. The O. R. & N. refuses to stop trains Nos. and 2 at Hermiston. These are the through trains, and we have no day trains except a 'stub' from Pendleton to Portland, although the through night trains stop at Hermiston. This Is very aggravating for our citizens, and will be more so with the rush of homeseek ers, when the land opening takes place. "Petitions of protest have been signed and will soon be presented t" the rail road officials, asking them to remedy the situation. Evidently the only rea son for running the trains through without stopping Is o save a few min utes' time, but we don t think we are being justly treated." Tli is Is What Sousa Says.
