'. -'IS-' 1 ' THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, WEDNESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 9, -1007. 15 TODAY'S MARKETS UDDir firm ii DOING BETTER Fractional Advance Noted in Best Packs on Account; of Increased Call. Front street feature: Apple market I very good. Eggs are Just holding. Dressed veal Is not so high. More dressed hogs coming. Binall Arlsona' potato trade. Something about the hop trade. Pilot bread Is advanced, plaaatem goes down again. Flour sales are heavier. "Wheat Is advanced lc. Chickens are In better call. Muscat grapes are in good call. Run of ocean smelt is good. Apple IXarket Is Ysry Oood A very good tjne la ruling In the apple market. Demand Is growing ieiier every oay. ana at mis time the tone Is the healthiest of the present season. Supplies are coming In faster out mt volume aoes not snow up so heavy on account of the improved Bell ing. For strictly fancy four-tier stork, the price is ruling about 15c a box nigner. values today ranarlnr between $1.60 and 1.76 for best. Any sort of apple wnt una tue Hi i.uu a do today: no matter what the pack Is. However, It Is the packed stock that finds the best call even at much the best values. Muscat grapes are rather scare along r run i street at mis time, out other varieties continue In heavy receipts with a rather llarht call the same an last week. For Muscats there remains a very good demand at top flguses. Oregon Malagas are coming quite freo- ly but the trade does not seem dis posed to rake hold of them for some reason or other. Tomato supplies are not quite so lib eral but the market has about all it needs because of the generally poor quality; most, unripe. Some Arlsona Potato Trade. A small amount of potato business Is still reported from Arlsona, which admits of the receivers paying 76c at country pointe for best quality. The California markets are still too low to admit of any business in that di rection from here. Onions are holding steady locally with no apparent hast.? on the part of producers to make sales at this time. Price nominally the same. Mark Ievy 4 Co. report the arrival of the first California walnuts of the present season's growth. The nuts aro of good quality and are finding a de mand at 20c a pound. Only a small amount came in the shipment, this mak ing the price higher than would have been the case had a carload came. Zgg-1 Are Just Holding. Taking the aggregated arrivals of local eggs along iront street, the sup plies are slightly Increased over what iney were a week ago. in the mar ket, most of the sales reported today are at j-c, although nome are still talking of receiving a higher flguro. The larger firms along the street are selling at i.c Chicken market is in much better condition. One of the most prominent retailers has just finished his new kill ing house and has been In the market for supplies the past 24 hours. Today's market Is at 12c for mixed. A fractional advance la likely either today or. tomorrow In the cheese mar ket on account of the better tone. In a email way some dealers are said to re receiving an advance of Vtc a pound. Supplies not so liberal. Some cheese is going to the north Creamerv butter Is rlennlnir nn mnr-h hotter on late arrivals but tho market Is still burdened to some extent with neeumulated holdings which were re- celved last week. Some are talklnir of an advapce. Brief Votes of the Trade. Dressed veal Is in moro liberal supply and the price Is not so high. Large slzos depress values. Pilot bread is advanced c a pound and bluestone Is down c. Run of ocean smelt Is very good and makes up somewhat for the shortage In other varieties. Heavy buying is shown In the sugar market and some are again predicting a fractional advance. Tackage figs are arriving quite freely and aro finding a very good sale. Chlttlm bark Is very slow selling tnese nays at rormor values. Eastern markets are quirt according to latest . reports from there. The price is hold ing. Front street values: Drain, Flour ana Teed. For in- e atance, at this time there Is a 4 very large amount of heavy veal A arriving along Front street. Sup- 4 plies of heavy veal are lncreas- 4 e lng while demand Is decreasing. 4 , A short time ago this veal would , have been In perfect marketable e ,e shape and a better price 2c a e pound at least oould have been obtained. Even at this time Small veal ' commands a big e premium, but it Is likely that ) . producers will continue to hold 4 them as, of old until they are Just opposite from what the e market wants. This la the usual e e occurrence. . , : - , ' e mADvlt BETTER CONDITION RULING POULTRY "A much better condition ex ists In the poultry market this week, and supplies are now well cleaned up. There Is no percepti ble change In the price, but the mand la much better and we look for all arrivals to clean up read ily this week. Eggs are holding their own In food shape, atrictly fresh stock being In strong demand at quota tions. Much storage stock la be ing used, a large percentage of the trade not being willing to pay the advancejsked for local arrivals. Supplies of veal and hogs have been quite liberal of late, but the market U still holding firmly at quotations." B. W. Graham of Templetor Graham. poultry, l&lHo per lb. higher. Hops, Wool and Mldsa. SAYS ENGLAND WANTS 25,000 BALES HOPS Garmicliael, Buyer for For eign Markets, Said to Advise Wait. According to information now com ing, England will soon be in this mar ket for some 25,000 bales of good Ore gon hops. According to reports this announce ment ts being sent out by Jack Car miohael. the prominent buyer for En glish account. It is stated that Mr. Carmlchael has Issued a circular In which he states that England will soon be in the market for 20.000 or 23.000 bales of Oregon hops and growers hav ing thin quality should wait until the samples reach the other side before getting anxious to sell. It is likewise stated that on this ac count Paul R. G. Horst is so willing to take in his 12c contracts made some time ago. Horst has always been a bugbear in tho market; his actions both ering the sellers more than any other dealer. At one time he will advance the irlco here and cut It abroad In order to do up his English competitors and this is said by some to be (he reason why he is so anxious to take in his con- raa I i . f . , rtH inn that Unp.t 1 . This lat ter price Is being freely offered for quality not so gooa as ne nas contracts on. In anv pwnl thA denlftr hav ft'at tint so wonderful a thing after all that the big operator is taking in these 12c con- tracts. If the market was higher he would certainly want the growers to deliver, so with the shoe on the other foot it should make no difference with a contract. The market price Is holding un changed but as stated In The Journal several davs ato the dealers are cut ting down their limits, for they realize tne market has gone neyond their reach and will go higher If they persist in I covering at mis time. A decided Innovation In the form of complaints and warrants, which will undoubtedly meet with popular approv al, has been Introduced in the munici pal court by the city attorney, at the apeclal lnstanceand request of Police Judga George JT Cameron. During his vacation spent In the Pu- ?et sound oountry. Judge Cameron vls ted Seattle and studied the methods in vogue In the police court of that oity. He ascertained that instead of having two separate forms for com plaints and warrants, the Seattle au thorities combined these two documents on one sheet, the complaint occupying one side and the warrant appearing on the reverse. Always on the lookout for anything tending to reduce the expense of op eration of the court over which he pre sides, and Incidentally simplify present methods, Judge Cameron secured sev eral of these forms and submitted them to the city attorney for an opinion aa to their legality. City Attorney Kavanaugh found noth ing In tho codes prohibiting tho com bining of complaints and warrants on one form and recommended the ehang. It will now be possible for the de fondants at the time of arrest to as certain from the complaint the specific nature of the crime charged. In fil ing complaints the warrant bearing the name of the arresting officer will necessarily be always on hand. IDAHO SUPBEME COURT JUDGE ILL (Special Dlirxtrh to The Journal.) Boise, Ida., Oct. 9.
