Powell, a prom inent lumber manufacturer and capi talist of Louisiana, who was a Portland visitor yesterday. "Regardless of ene mies he may have made and all the talk of past campaigns, the people have come to be convinced that Bryan is one of the brainiest men the American nation ever produced. Personally, I believe he ranks Intellectually st the head of the ablest men of all nations " Mr. Powell said the people of the south believe Bryan Is honest as well as brainy. They would rather have him for president than any other man, and if they cannot get him they would favor Tom Johnson next. As to chances of election, he declared Johnson's chance would be good with Bryan sup porting him on the tump. "Some people claim that times would be hard lr the Democrats were sucesa ful In nominating and electing Bryan. I think it is possible that there might be brought about something of a strin gency in financial affairs, for a little time after election, but It woiill not last. What difference would It make, anyhow? We are not living altogether for the dollar. The country Is pros perous and productive, and there is no danger of any of us suffering from lack of work or food." Mr. Powell has made two or thraa visits to Oregon In the laat year, and Is completely captivated with the climate and resources of the state. He came here with his wife and family last spring, and spent a portion of the sum mer. He said the family was so well pleased that every member wanted to remain permanently, and had he con sented to buy a home they would have settled down In Portland without a regret. Conservative and cautious In his business methods and successful at the age of maturity, he Is extrav agnnt In his expressions of admiration of Oregon and Portland. He said: "This Is the best country I have ever seen, and I do not believe It can be equaled anywhere for productiveness and pleasant living conditions. When I first came through to the coast it struck me that the state was largely composed of barren mountains and hills. I have discovered that the bar ren mountains sre a very small part of It, and that It Is a great agricul tural state. Even the hills and moun tains are good soil and can be culti vated. If we had these hills back east the ralnpours would have washed them all down ana leveled them years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Powell have a number of old southern friends who are resi dents of Portland, and It Is probable that when the Louislanlans return again next spring they will conclude to make this city their home.
