plans for a new double-track steel
bridge, and that work Is about to bo
commenced on such a structure to take
the place of the present steel bridge,
Mr. O'Brien was not confirmatory, al
though he stated that in course of an
nual Inspections of the present bridge
for making repairs plans for double and
single-track bridges had been made. He
stated that no decision had been reached
regarding the bridge question, but ad
mitted that in his Judgment a double
track bridge would ultimately be built

lished rumor that a number of the latest
gasoline motor cars would be sent to the
O. R. A N. company for operation be

"There is nothing In the rumor. The
facta retarding these gasoline motors
are that the Union Pacific company
at Its shops in Omaha has built about
20 new motor cars, and very Important
improvements have been made over the
cars that were tested on the Pacific
coast. They Improve the cars in con
struction Just as they do automobiles.
"The new cars are, I undorstand,
About four times as powerful as the
KO-horseoower car we tested here. They
have also succeeded In muffling the
explosions, and In starting the car more
easily. We have been asked If we
could use two or three of these cars
on the Oregon lines, and are now mak
ing inquiries bs to their construction
and practicability for the Oregon
grades. No decision has been reached."
A contract ha been let to Robert
Wakefield tor construction of tha con
crete piers for the Southern Pacific
brldg to ba built over the Willamette
river at Oswego. Work cannot be
started until the river recedes to Ita
low stage. The steel has been ordered,
and the spans will be $.00 feet long.
The center pier will be 110 feet high,
of which 8$ feet will be submerged.
Tn w shore piers will have a
helghth of 60 feet.
