The planta of both men have since been removed and the praotloe stopped. Mrs. Evans says: "Ona rase of poi soning from meat waa reported but tha evidence did not justify any action on tha part of tha health officer. Both sides have resorted to every conceivable method of snatching victory from tha complicated sltuatlona that have developed. There ara three tickets in tha field but practically but two aides aa in ao many Instances tha People's and Independents' candidates are allied against the Republican. A libel ault and mandamus proceed ing have grown out of tha feeling that haa been aroused. The breachea be tween tha factions have bean ao wid ened aa the election approached that there ara indications that tha feeling may not ba allayed for some time. A lack of harmony has been ona of tha characteristics of tha city, and this haa been made more serious with every city election, Tha Three .platforms. A forecast is difficult. All who ara Interested in the campaign claim every thing In alght for their favorite candi dates. There ara a great many people In Bt. Johns, however, who have not been greatly Interested. Thla ' Is tha result ef tha character of tha cam paign. It appeals to these people mora a a-riotous scramble for -office and a cuahloned seat In tha new city hall. It la a faot tnat there have been no clearly outlined principles. The three tickets ware put Into -tha field to ac commodate all who wanted to enter the fight. Promises have been as numerous aa tn any campaign. - Tha Republicans have rested on their title and believe victory can rest nowhere alaa with se curity except on their banner. Tha In dependents are clamorous for munici pal reform and a stricter adherence to tha charter. Tha People's seems to have appealed In a more conservative way for a similar principle. . i As far as can ba determined tha elec tion of K. C Couch, Kspubltcan candi date for mayor, would not bo a great surprise. Mr. Couch Is very well liked and haa not been attacked In tha slight est way-" during tha campaign. A. R. Downs, tha Independent candidate, has been counted - out of tha running al though as thla is April 1. there may be some surprises. Mr. Downs and S. C. Norton, the People's candidate, will draw votes from tha same constitu ency and It la thought that Norton will draw tha moat. -After- Thomdyke'a Seals. Tha bitter battle haa been made against Recorder W. L. Thorndyke, Re publican candidate for reelection. For thla office tha Independents and Peo ple's aupportera ara united on their candidate, B. M. Eason. The election of Thorndyke la very doubtful. v The friends of Esson predict that ha will jrln In a walk. There are two barbers opposing each other for the Treasurer's office, George M. Hall and Adam Kaem- letn, with tha former In the lead, per hapa. because ha has a year's expe rience and a good record behind him. ' Where the People's and Independents' stalwarts are united on a councilman that candidate has a vary good chance.
