Ths United States grand Jury here today took up the consideration of ons of ths most unusual cases of alleged fraud that has ever worried the pension officials st Washington. The case Is that of John Martin of Marlboro, a gray-haired vet eran of the civil war. . According to ths videnra of witnesses the accused has defrauded the government out of shout 34,000 by setting up aa his own record the civil war record ot John Martin of Uxbrldge. ' . The accused la said to have confessed to the deception snd to have admitted he falsely represented himself as John Martin of Uxbrldge, a member, of Com pany D, Fourth Massachusetts cavalry, who was wounded In the hip and cap tured by the Confederates at Magnolia, Florida, and geatla. AndarsonxUle,. He was pensioned In 1878 and arrears were paid to' him back to ths time he claimed he had been wounded. , .The Marlboro John Martin Is alleged to have' drawn the pension until 1800. When he received a letter from the Ux bcidgaVJohn Martin, who waa then In Scotland. Informing him that the writer intended to apply for' a pension and re questing htm to assist In securing It As a result of that letter the defendant made a trip to Scotland and then the tTxbrldge John ..Martin la said to have discovered the deception that had been worked on him and ths government by the use of his name. The Marlboro John Martin agreed to remit the penalon to the Uxbrldge John Martin In Scot land and he did this until last June, when hla falure to do so led to ths ex posure of the alleged fraud and the mat ter being brought to ths attsnttnn of I he federal authorities.
