An aotlve cam paign will be atarted Immediately health reports and newspapers, and the coming state legislature will be asked to make salutary laws. - The society will In every way promote publlolty, on til . thMM that 1 np.nna e J I...... Is causing an enormous, death rate. President K. M. Brown of the new so ciety read statistics showing that deaths from tuberculosis- were 60 per cent srreatar la civilised cnuntrlu thui the deaths from all other contagious and Infectious diseases combined. He In sisted that this rate could be reduced enormously by education, citing that s century ago one third of all deaths re sulted from smallpox, , while that dis ease now causes but a trifling few. "Consumption Is an old disease," said he. 'Your hundred years before Christ a man wrote of It. Ten per cent of the cases come from cattle, from milk or Iood."Ths other 0 per cent come from our fellow-men. ---We must teach af flicted persons to destroy the sputum which spreads the bacilli. TbeSe are killed by the light Environment plays the most Important rols In spreading! these bacilli, which thrive In the dark. "Consumption. Is never Inherited. Of the lil.OOO cases now In this country, every one came by Infection. I believe with Pasteur that It Is posslbls to cause disease resulting from germs to pass from the world. The prevalent idea that climate causes consumption Is all wrong. Europeans, who are far ahead of us In these things, say climate does not matter. Sixty per cent of 'all the cases of consumption can be Saved, with proper sanitation. In Illinois ths chil dren ef 1,100 families were rendered homeless In ons year by It." The physicians present agreed that, as to the location of sanitarium or of houses In which consumptives live, it Is unimportant, whether they are high or low, the temperature hot or cold, the climate v moist or dry the Important thing being to establish correct meth ods of outdoor living. . The province of British Columbia seems . doomed to havS a, standing trouble In the mater of Immigration. For. ys.ers-.Uje. ..lattuaJon of the Chinese and Japs gave rise to all manner of difficulty, but this was over come a year or so ego,, when the Do minion government practically exoluded the Chinese by the raising of the head tax to 1509. The Japanese government before that time Jiad restricted emigra tion from that country rather than sub mit to having exclusion laws enacted. But no sooner had the Chinese and the Japanese Immigration been brought to a satisfactory condition than an in vasion came from India. .This later class promises to be a more difficult one to control. Thla Is due to the fact that the Hindoos are British subjects and as such cannot be excluded from the empire, ' They are .coming by bun' d reds and already- there . are several thousands in the province.
