An additional train, to make two
hours' better time than la now being
made, will be put on the Southern Pa
cifio between Portland and San Fran
eleoo nest Sunday. The train will leave
Portland at 11:10 p. m. and reach San
Francisco the second morning at 1:41
o'clock. . The train will be a change
from the present method of running aa
extra section of the evenlna train. It
will consist of a heavy oil-burning loco
motive, an observation car. a diner,
three standard Pullmans, tourist sleep
ing car, chair car, amoklng car ' and
combination mall, -baagace and express
car, and win be officially designated
No. 11. Coming north -tbn-train -will
leave San Franclaoo at :S p. m. and
arrive at Portland at 11:10 p. m .; en
abUng passengers for points further
north to make connection with the
Northern Pacific train leaving this city

The suit was Intended to test the law,
and Attorney W. Y: Masters, who ap
peared for BronLJe, raised the question
of its constitutionality. Judge Frazer
declined to rale on that point, stating
that he would 'leave the quentlon to the
supreme court. The question whether
the fruit condemned was. really infected
e decided In favor of the fruit In

TWO GIRLS ALLEGED
TO NEED REFORMING

Salem, Nov. 20. Grace Van Ostler,
the lT-year-pld girl who was arrested
by Officer Longcor at t o'clock In the
morning Saturday while roaming the
streets. Is still In the county jail, pend
ing the disposition of hsr case by the
city authorities.
When placed under arreat ahe told
the policeman that she waa from Dun
dee and that her "parents lived t Bet
tie but she had been living with her
aunt at Dundee. She had been' attend
ing school In Corvallls, so she claims,
but was persuaded to leave tbe college
town and come to Salem by a young
man 'named Slyder, who soon deeerted
her, and Is supposed to be at Portland.
On her arrival at Salem she found
employment at the cannery, and later
worked at a hotel.
- Another girl, who la aald to live In
North Salem and who haa been chummy
with the Van Ostler slrl, is also re
ceiving tha atttentlon of the polloe, and
an effort will bo made to have goth I
girls committed to the care of the
Boys' and Girl's Aid society at Port

a tribute to tee memory of the famous
statesman, warrior -and-1 patriot from
the state of South ' Carolina, waa . un
veiled today tn the presence of an Im
mense assemblage that Included visit
ors -from.aU. parta-of tha state..,. Iha
statue is placed tn the oapltol equara.
The unveiling waa preceded by a large
parade of military and clvie organisa
tions. The gray uniforms of the veter
ans, the rattle and clatter' of the horses,
and the many marching militiamen
served to tint the prooesslon with just
enough martial color to make It form
fitting preliminary to the ..unveiling
of tha bronse monument to the famous
leader of the "men of Hampton." '
'General M. C. Butler, who waa 4 fol
lower of Gen. Hampton tn both war and
politics and one of his stneerest admir
ers, delivered the oration at the - un
veiling. His address waa a sincere
eulogy of- the character, devoted fealty
to country and home and the courag
eous qualities of the hero whose statue
served to Inspire the sentences. Other
brief speeches, were delivered and the
program was appropriately Interspersed

aged 1. lost his Ufa. ,
' Smith's -parents, who live at Port
land, own a ranch near the head of
Shoalwater bay, on which a daughter
and her husband have been living,. They
had gone to Portland for a few daya,
leaving Wilbur In charge.
Saturday afternoon he. In company
Suck hunting on the bay. The two boys
were standing In the boat looking for

was corked, went off, the charge en
tering Smith's back, causing Instant
death. .
