MILLER A determined effort Is being made to secure a pardon for A. J. Miller, recently convicted by a Jury in Judge Fraser's department of the circuit eourt, of shooting O. F. Strack through tha foot at the Twelve-mile roa.dhouse, con ducted by Miller on the Sandy road. On account of extenuating circum stances, Judge Fraaer Imposed a fine of 1260 Instead of. sentencing Miller to im prisonment Accused of using a canceled postage stamp in sending a letter, Sam Salee, a laborer, was arrested this morning by federal officers and given a hearing be fore a United mates commissioner. He was released on his personal bond. Salee was In Baker City three weeka ago and had occasion to send a letter to relativea at Vancouver, Wash. He was broke at the time, he said, but had a Btamp . which he had carried In hia pocket for some time. He waa not aware, he said, that it naa been used before, The letter reached the postomce at Vancouver, but at that place the post master detected the cancellation marks, which were barely .noticeable. He held the letter and reported his discovery to the chief Inspector -at Spokane. That official In turn referred the case to the local inspectors for Investigation. Inspector Riches went .to work on the case and finally succeeded In locat ing the man who had caused the govern ment, officials ao much trouble because he didn't have the price of a stamp. In talking with the Inspector Salee practi cally admitted having used the canceled tamp, It Is said.
