With the entire country lined up In support of or In op position to the Chamberlain tariff scheme it la not to be wondered that keen popular Interest la being m&ni f ss ted in the centenary celebrations of the birth of Richard Cobden, the great Apostle of free trade. The anniversary Is being; celebrated In many parts of the country. In addition to the great Alexandra Palace meeting; tomorrow, where John Morley and Sir Henry Camp- bell-Bannerman will be the principal speakers, and the Birmingham gathering- oa the same day, meetings will be held In Edlnburg, Rochdale, Bradford, and other Scottish and English towns. At Cobden's birthplace, Mldhurat, a demonstration for the whole of the county of Sussex took place today at Oatscroft, a . portion of the old estate which was purchased as the nations tribute to Cobden. Richard Cobden, one of the forest of English politicians of the last century. was born at Mldhurat In 1804. In 1834 (6 he traveled extensively in Turkey, Greece and Egypt, and also visited the United States. The result of bis travels appeared in several pamphlets In which he ridiculed the workings of diplomacy, and asserted England's mission to be the avoidance of war and the extension of commerce. To his lepturea all over the country, and his speeches in parlia ment, to which he was returned In 1841, were in great part due the abolition of the corn-laws at so early a period as 1846. cobden spoke out strongly In favor of the north during the American Civil war and always stood up aa a staunch friend of the United States, (Br Oeonrs B. Xxigna.) Kansas City, Juns J. A syndicate of Mormons hat been formed to introduoe the Percheron horse into Utah and the northwest This week two carloads of valuable Fercherons were shipped by exprtts to Ogden, Utah, by the Mc Laughlln Bros. here. There were 18 of the blooded stallions In each car and each one was worth from 11,006 to 61,600, while several were worth 13,500, juat why the horses were sent by ex preas hag been aJmott impossible to learn. The McLaughlin Bros, here say tbey were sent on telegraphic order, a shipment of horsea by express is mighty good expresa business. The owner must- take the chances of losses or the express company would charge a rate that would stagger even the Mor mon ayndloate. All horses look alike to the express company and they guar antee to pay only ISO In case of loss. The express charges on each car were I860. The stallions are to be sold In the north west. McLaughlin Bros, have orders for seven more ears, which will be sent to points In the northwest. Xaamb Crop Up to Avars. Returns received from various corre spondents in Colorado ahow that the lamb crop of that big aheep state will be up to the average this year. The aheep owners generally aay that lamb ing has been very successful this spring. Reports of a similar nature come from New Mexico and Texas. The northwest is in almost as good a condition. By fsr the moat satisfactory trade in beef cattle of the year has prevailed, the last 10 days. Prices cloaed last week at the highest level in months. Ad vances for three days ranged from II to 10 oents and in the laat 10 daya the market jumped 60 cents on medium grades and 40 cents on the tops. Laat week receipts of cattle at the Ave prln Clpal markets of the central west aggregated about 120,000, agalnat 111. 000 the week before and 144,360 in tha same week laat year. The conclusion reached by many la that the dressed beef men fear, a shortage in fed cattle before good grass cattle come, as grass is lste in some sections and short on sccount of dry weather in other parts of the range country. Besides it Is generally believed that there are not nearly ao many cattle on feed at this time as there was at the same time a year ago. Beeeljrbs at all BUrkst. Choice to prime native heifers and yearling steers sdvanced 10 to SO cents and are higher than at any previous time this year. Medium to common grade are higher also. Veal calves advanced about 25 cents during the week. Not many are coming and few are wanted at the present prices. The stocker and feeder trade de veloped a stronger tone with the ad- vanc In beef grades. Both " heavy feeders and lightweight atockers sold st 14.50 to 84.(0 during the week. Only the best grades are In demand, however, there being little call for the common to medium klnda and no Improvement In prices. Stock cows, heifers and calves sold to better advantage and in extreme cases 10 to 20 cents blgher. beep Moss Bold XTp.
