As an aftermath to the troubles which have brought the two so conspicuously before the public eye In the last few months Mrs. Van Houten haa sued for a dlvoroe and asks the cir cuit court for the custody of their two little girls, Hatel and Agnes. The ault waa filed yesterday afternoon by Ed and A. R. Mendenhall. In the complaint Mrs. Van Houten recounts that she was married to the alayer of Albert Toung on February 8. 1806, and that almost continuously alnce 1887 he haa treated her in a cruel and Inhuman manner. The first specific com plaint is that a few days after' their child Haael wss born. In 1808,' while she was In a weak and feeble condition, Van Houten cursed and swore at her and called her a number of vile names, after ward . shaking . his clenched fist -in her face and threatening to "crush her face and stamp her life out." Frequently since then, she asserts, he has accused her of being unchaste, and fear that he would do her physical vio- lence. , She recites that last April 18 he beat her, discoloring her face and bruising her body, and May 8 choked and beat her. He was convicted In the municipal court of the last offense. Life with Van Houten, she avers, is dangerous, and Bhe fears he will carry his oft-repeated threata Into execution and kill her. Their two children, she continues, have been fed and clothed by her since April, 1000, Van Houten contributing only a few dollars to their support during that time.
