the guidance of such men as General
Funston will be of Inestimable value to
the militia foroes, - The - knowledge

ment the army department has decided

to bring men from its southern end to an
encampment la Washington - would re-
Quire more than a week of railroad
traveling In going and coming. This
would require more time than the aver
age militiaman can afford to spare. In
stead of this program, another enoamp
ment will be made for California and Its
adjacent states in the southwest and
another encampment ground will be

training for the 'presidency. When he

set that they were prepared to contest
every inch of ground before succumbing
to the Olney avalanche. Their program.

the trouble possible In the convention.
It Is reported that if finally beaten the
Hearst following will withdraw, organ
ise a rump convention and attempt to
have the delegates thus chosen recog
nised by the national committee aad the
national convention.
There appeara to be little doubt. Judg
ing from the trend of the opening pro
ceedings, that the regular convention
will succeed in carrying out Ita original
Idea of Indorsing Olney for -the presl
dentlal nomination. Whether the dele
gation will be bound by the unit rule is
a question. Mayor Patrick A. Collins
of Boston, and William A. Oaston. who
ran for governor last year, will be two
of the four chosen as delegates-at-large.
Others mentioned for the honor are Con
gressman BL I Thayer and Charles 8.
Hamlin. The name of William I Doug
las, the Brockton shoe man. Is also sug
gested for tba honor. -

cargo carrying business up to a paying
basis. The steamers are alao well em

some that thla may have something to
do with the Change ta the situation.
Unless the price of wheat, however, ta
Europe should become higher the ex
porters ars almost unanimous la the be
lief that the rates will not advanoe to
any. great, extent.. .At, thla-tlma, they
state, the local price of wheat la higher
than the market quotationa at Liver
pool, and as long as this disparity con
tinues to sxlst there Is no cause for
any great amount of concern over the
matter. They atate that there Is no
likelihood of a scarcity of ships, and
aa long as there is Idle tonnage rates in
all probability will remain at a reason-

There ware several disappointed peo
ple at .the foot of Washington street
y ester da Jr morning. In some unknown
manner they ' had been informed that
the steamer Charles R. Spencer was
going to resume her run to The Dalles,
beginning yesterday, and they called at
the dock to make the trip. It waa the
intention for the Spenoer to go out ail
right, lt is said, but owing to a few
little matters which had been over
looked la the rush and which required
attention the . plana were changed. - It
la now said that aha will make her first
trip on Friday, notwithstanding all the
superstitious notions with which ths
fifth day of the week baa been sur
rounded since time immemorial.
The Spenoer moved down to the gas
dock yesterday afternoon, where her
tanks were supplied with fuel oil. Then
she shifted over to the Victoria dot
phlns, where she is now lying. In her
new coat ef paint aha presents a fine
appearance, and those who saw her
passed many comments in her favor.

a hoist early this year which will be fol
lowed by a email mill. The May'
flower mine la showing up some rood
ore as a result of the development work
being carried on there and will prob
ably be tha beat paying property In that
vicinity before the summer is over.
J. EL Hard man of Grand Rapids, Mich..
arrived in Grant's Pass last week and
together with Oeorge a. Graham and
George Cox made a trip to the Bohemia
district to look over the property now
owned by the Oregon-Paclflo M. A M.
company, consisting of nine claims,
Upon their return Mr. Hardaan ex
pressed himself aa very well pleased
with the showings in the working tun
nels and other places which could be
seen at the present time.
Work at the Red Jacket mine has
been suspended on account of the heavy
now or water encountered in the drift
from the SOO-foot level. The water can
not be handled with the present equip
ment, ana work cannot be resumed un
til a pumping plant is installed, which
will take from three to four weeks.

end of the drift, and Superintendent
Wood says he will be Impatient to re
sums work, and explore the new strike.

The manager of the Kittannlng com
pany, owning the Big Four group, Red
Boy district, says that work la to be
resumed there early In the spring. He
has succeeded in financing the property
to hla satisfaction, snd will begin work

to be carried out will be driving a sec
ond crosscut to open the vein system
on the lower level then that now com
pleted, and drifting from both this and
