rollers were idle most of last month.

tion of Chief of Police Charles Elton
was accepted by the police board thin
morning.-; Ex-Sheriff W. A. Hamfhel
was appointed to fill the vacancy. -
Elton s resignation Was the direct re
sult of a tight made against him by the
Los Angeles Record, which openly ac
cused him of protecting cribs and gam
bling resorts. The fight was a bitter
one, Elton at one time arresting" -a num
ber of the Record employes at a card
party. Latett a detective who waa at
loggerheads with the police reported
that sleuths had, been shadowing mem
bers of the Record staff. T
