' , Front Street, Dec. 21. Vhe principal r Items of Interest In the local market today were: . Provision prices lower. 1-ocal lard oil cent. Eggs down again. -. , . ' -Poultry,, not moving., a :,. ; " ' ; "' Provisions Ar Xiowtr. ' -- ( v; .The Union Meat company announces , several changes in the local prices of provisions. Breakfast bacon is quoted , about ft cent lower, while regular short .clears, -clear backs, smoked and un ; smoked,' are quoted cents a pound lower..-Both kettle leaf and steam ren dered lard of local manufacture are 4 cent lo wr. todays Th: newt price 'list -; takes effect at ence. - ' Eggs Tumble Again. -As was exclusively predicted In The 'Journal on Saturday the price' on fresh ' Oregon eggs went down today. This morning found the market weaker than : on Saturday and everywhere could be seen stocks of eggs that refused to be sold. . Although the receipts of eggs in this market at present are not very large still ; the present high price Is causing the A ftmtt Tf vrt Ha anll ami! at a nnn a art ttns-i the few arrivals are hard to sell. Today ' the price went down to 82 cents . dosen flat and still the market remained ; quiet Some of the dealers on the street expect the price to go down to the 30 cent mark within the next few days. . "!''Sv:i' Xa th Poultry Market There were no very heavy arrivals in the poultry mti ket today but the market is still badly overloaded with the large" receipts, of Friday and Saturday. In the Cleanup on Saturday aome mixed chick ens were told as low as 8 cents a pound but the average sales were made at 9 cents. The call for straight hens Is now off. the dealers preferring to buy the mixed stock at the-lower price. The receipts of dressed poultry are beginning to pile up larger but there seems to be a fairly healthy demand. Some turkeys are arriving and are being sold all the way froth 19 to 20 cents for the dressed stocks. No live birds came In today but as yet none are wanted. The future of the turkey market remains a mystery and will probably remain up until af "ter" Christmas. Larger receipts will have a disastrous effect and the present same price as on Thanksgiving. Botiing Doing la Potatoes. : There is absolutely nothing doing in the potato market as far as shipping de mand Is concerned but in, the local mar ket , the demand for nearly all grades seema to be slightly Improved. Today's reports from San Francisco say that the market there has no signs of an -advance and none are expected until after the holidays if then. The onion mar ket remains .the sajne nothing but dull ness, u. Prices lit both lines are un' changed. ' . ' - .- ' ,- '. ZATge Hop Sal Beported. - The first large hop sale of fancy hops for several months was reported on Sat urday up the Valley. It was that of Patterson Bros. of Olequa to Tacoma parties. 668 bales of fancy hops at 23 4 cents a pound. The sales of the medium grades continue quite large with prices ruling today from H to 20 cents. Batter Still Sail. ' The creamery butter market remains' dull, with every prospect of Its continu ance for some time. The Front-street : houses are still piled high with the bet ter grades, snd the-movement is really nominal. Store and dairy grades con tinue to come in an oversupply and the price Is weaker. v , V ' Wheat Is Offering. . More wheat is now being offered than for several months, but the sales report ed are small. The prices now being asked by the farmer holders are slightly , above those ruling, and the miller do : not seem to care to take hold. Up the valley some of, the interior millers are paying a small premium for Immediate delivery, but beyond thla the market re mains at quotations. Opinions en the Market. W. B. Glafke company Butter mar ket remains quiet, ..most of the country orders for Christmas ' have been filled. ana we now iook ror a good city trade. Turner A Co. BROKERS-OPINIONS ON NEW YORK-StOCKS I-ogan A Bryan,: New York: London was a large seller of stocks, being itt fluenced, no doubt, byt the -Japaneae-HuHalan artalr. We regard the lattter as the most serious menace to the mar ket that is apparent. Call money is easy and seems likely to continue o. Bo far-as domeatie eondltlons are-po eerned, we see nothing to make any great selling pressure, DUt as to .What the eastern political situation may do is to us a matter of doubt. Pending de velopments In that direction, we would feci disposed to go slow. - v . Mclntyre & Marshall, New York: The continued weak .condition of stocks is attracting attention, especially, as thejre is an apparent absence of any- substan tial support from Insiders. The weak ness In united States Bteel preferred Is partly traced to further . protlt-taking and to leading Interests on the bear side. The advance in the coal stocks was largely speculative, and sham news usually comes from manipulators. There httxe been no developments to explain the strength in Brooklyn Rapid Trair sit, but 'rumors current say the stock has been absorbed 'by parties close - to Pennsylvania, and also oy some of the Standard Oil people. Trade has become dull and more professional today. We look for a . dull and steady market. Dick Bros., .New -York; The Btock market' was dull snd .irregular today. Pool manipulations of specialties was continued against this, and some rother good selling appeared in various stocks, and the general tone was rather heavy. United States Steel broke sharply at the opening and failed to recover. The rails ' equipments shares were pushed up sharply, but- soon reacted. Pressed steel was strong, but closed heavy; Brooklyn Rapid Transit ran up on re newed pool buying, but the move did not last. Rock Island was under pres sure, but held fairly well. The general list did not make a great move. Money is easy. The market closed, heavy in tone. .: . DESCRIPTION. Auacouda Mining Co,,,.. Anisi. copper to. ...... Atchison, com....,,.... do preferred. All of the livestock jour nals are calling -upon the stockmen to do something to save tha cattle In dustry. A statement Issued by Secre tary Martin of the National association has been printed and discussed gener ally. Mr. Martin says in tha last 18 months the manipulations of the pack ing combination has cost the livestock interests 1760,000,000. The huge sum seems almost incredible, but the figures bear Mr. Martin out In Kansas alone in the last year the owners of cattle have suffered a loss of 811,000,000. Tbs Heavy Los la Xaasa. The figures that are true of Kansas are true of nearly- all the other state, Secretary. Coburn of v the' Kansas atate board of ' agriculture baa compiled figures which bear Mr. Martin out. Mr. Coburn's deductions are that tlhj value of cattle In the state this year is 154,- 000,000 or 120 for each head., A year aao tha, value wa 124 a head, mis loss, when multiplied by th number of cattle owned In tha state, makes u, 000.000. --. : .;.'.;-,. v-; The Increase, of horses and mules in the state, however, forms a remarkable contrast. In tha last - year Kansas horses have increased in number rapidly and In value $12 each. The mules In the state have increased in similar propor tlon In number and in value $18 each. The law of supply and demand regu lates the horse and mule market, but not so the livestock market.
