Archie Ray and Bill Daly, two morphine eaters. whose time la spent almost wholly in tha sheriff's custody, are to bo examine! tomorrow by the county court to de termlns whether they are sane. If the court concludes that they are mentally unsound they will be sent to the state asylum at Salem. For several years Archie Ray has been a familiar figure in the police court and about the county jail. He la a confirmed victim of the morphine habit, though 'it la said that he waa at one time a prosperous cltlsen and property-owner. Until the county board established the rock pile, his life at the jail was an easy one. He was always treated as a trusty, and waa allowed to corns and go almost at will, so that sentence of imprisonment never Inter fered very seriously with his liberty nor with his opportunities to get "dope." Daly was one of the prisoners who escaped not long ago from the rock pile, but he waa quickly recaptures. Like Archie Ray, he has been a habit ual Inmate of the jail, and apaprently found tha accommodations to his liking until the. rock pile changed a life of ease to one of hard labor. Capt Anderson left Portland June 15 last for Oakland on account of the se rious Illness of his wife's mother. He took charge of the San Jose post until sfter the regimental council, which closed last Friday. The Kllgores were sent to this city to relieve Anderson. The civil service commission has ar ranged for another examination of appli cants for positions on the police force October 31. Those Intending to try for the service must file their applications at least 10 daya before that date. Another feature of these examinations Is the pen alties Imposed because of failure to come up to some of the physical requirements. If a man is penalised 25 per cent he must be perfect In his written examination to become eligible. The chalnmen in the city engineer's de partment will perform their "stunts" or next Saturday.
