She was accosted by a well dressed young man, who said: "I am Detective Joe Day," ho said, In a gruff voice, "and I am going to arrest you for being out late. Miss Collins protested thst she was on her way home. "Well, come up to my ofllco. I do all my business there," replied the stran ger. Greatly frightened and convinced that ho was a detective, the young woman accompanied the stranger to a room near First and Alder streets. In the apartment was another man, who also pretended to bo a detective. ' Taking the woman a hand, the first "detective" examined a gold ring on one of her fingers, ssklng her where she got it She explained, whereupon the man tore It from her ringer and put It In his pocket Both men searched her clothes for money, but round none. Then they threatened her with arrest, and whenever she protested they said they would take her right down to the police station. Matters pertaining to the penetration of Central Oregon with an extension of the Columbia Southern under the con trol or ownership of the O. R. & N., or the construction of another road south from some point near The Dalles, have not been affected by anything that has occurred during the past few weeks. Propositions , for the sale of the road have been made by the Columbia South ern president. E. E. Lytle, and have been taken under consideration by the head of the Harrlman system, E. H. Harrlman, being transmitted to him from President A. L. Mohler of tho O. R. & N. No action has yet been taken. President Mohler makes a Journey to New Tork every fall to take up items of policy and matters of paramount Im portance. Probably President Mohler will bo In conference with Mr. Harrlman upon the subject of tho Central Oregon proposed road when the former goes to New Tork In a few weeks. Prior to that time action of a final character may not be looked for. FUNERAL OF MRS. ALBRIGHT The funeral of Mrs. Jennie Albright, who died at 8 o'clock Tuosdsy evening. was held from the Evangelical Church in Upper Albina this afternoon. Mrs, Albright was the wife of O. A. Albright 801 Sellwood street, and was 28 years of age. She had been afflicted with dropsy and heart disease for three months. Mrs. Albright was a native Oregonlan. Captain John Pederson left for parts unknown several months ago and when his wife returned from Norway where she had been on a visit she learned her husband had Induced Mamie Forsett to marry him, saying that the absent woman was not married to him but only his mis tress. Aug. 12. Edward A. Mc Pherson and Chapel Ouard Jgy J. Mc- Cormlck of the penitentiary have re signed and leave the prison tonight It is believed that Deputy Warden Smith will succeed McPherson. Both men have contemplated this stop for some time. McPherson will return to Portland. The visit of Charles S. Fee, general ticket and passenger agent . for the Northern Pacific, who will arrive in Portland this evening, is said to be for the purpose of attending the .meeting. A. L. JW0 SMALL ROBBERIES Boy burglars were at work Tuesday night on tho East Side, but their plun der wss only a few boxes of cigars and a small amount of change. M. Moulder's tobacco store at Union avenue and East Burnslde street was visited, the" front end side doors being pried open. Tho stock was scattered over the floor, but only one 'box of cigars was missing. From the register and a slot machine about S in small change was obtained. The second burglary, was at the store of Wren & Faust, grocers, Powell and East Twenty-sixth streets, and is thought to hase been done by a gang of boys who hange around tho neighbor hood. They entered by a rear window.
