Any merchandise sate event showing radical reductions on high grade goods must necessarily have plain causes, so as to convince the public of the sincerity of the occasion. One Reason July is the month between seasons, and -trade is not so active at during the other eleven months of the year, and to create a demand for furnishings, we bare put into operation this Great Trade Event. Another Reason This season of the year is very timely for the purpose of rearrang ing stock and making room for the fall deliveries con to arrive. Still Another of Importance One of the principles of our store is to have none but the latest and most seasonable furniture, and in order not to have last season's goods accumulate with the fall stock, we are satisfied to sacrifice this remaining spring stock at the discounts quoted and still stimulate our volume of business for this off month. I For These Reasons s Is this event promoted, which will give everybody great opportuni ties to practice economy on the finest furniture values. THIS GREAT TRADE EVENT Commences today and lasts during the entire month GREAT DISCOUNTS HIGHEST QUALITIES LATEST STYLES High Grade Furniture To Suffer Consequences of Immense Discounts The reality of a GREAT TRADE EVENT of this character can only be undertaken, after the confidence, which is so necessary, has been shown. We earnestly believe that the good citizens of Portland and vicinity have entrusted us with that great ideal from the very feet of the steady and substantial growth of our business. Chief of Police Hunt has issued the following order,-the most Important points of which are that all1 patrolmen will henceforth work eight-hour shifts and that Portland Heights will have, beginning with tonight, a patrolman: To the Captains of Police: Commenc ing July C. 1903, at ( o'clock p. m., the following rule will be observed In the time of change of different relief! in the police force; w The first night relief will report for duty at 5 o'clock p. m., and will report oft duty at 1 o'clock. Tho second night relief will report on duty at 12:45 a, m., andreport off duty at 8:45 a. m. The day relief will report on duty at 8:30 a. m. and report off duty at 5:30 p. m. The officers on each beat will remain on their respective beats until the re-, llevtng squads have -reached their re spective districts. Whenever a call Is made for special night duty, the detail will be made from the day force, and the same rule will apply to the night force when a call is made for special duty for day. duty., j ...Whenever a call is -made for officers to perform extra duty, the captains in charge of the relief from which the de tail Is to be made will select the men for such duty In rotation, so that extra work will be equally divided as nearly as possible. It has been the custom heretofore for those desiring the ser vices of police for extra duty to name the officer desired. The objection to this is that a larger share of the work falls upon one than another. There may be times when such regard for special reasons may be granted. When this Is done, the service must be credited to the officers in the division of ' the ' extra work. . : .- An officer wOl bo placed, pa Portland Heights tomorrow night Two new officers, Kay and Roberts, will be added to the North End district CHARLES HUNT.
