An adver tisement in a local pa'per discloses that 8400.000 was left to James Rushcll of California by his father? with the understanding that, he should marry s New Jersey girl. The advertisement, which was Issued by Maurice B. Gluckof this city, asks for Information concerning other bene ficiaries of the legatee, who formerly resided in this city. Mr. giuck, who is the New Jersey representative of th estate, said that those mentioned in ttie advertisement are benflciaflea to the ex tent Df from, $1,000 to $2,000 each. Strowbridge, a pioneer of 1852 snd for more than half a century prominent in the affairs of the city of Portland. Deceased was 68 years of Age. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Foremost In the work of blazing the trail of civilization across plain and for est; foremost in the duty of conquering the wilderness, and foremost in the business of commercial pursuits, Jo seph A. Strowbridge could see the ac complishment of the end toward which he labored before death came. , Accus tomed to battle against hidden dangers and to be ready at all times to face whatever the unknown future might suddenly transfer into the present, Jo seph A. Strowbridge, although dead within an hour from the time the first shock came, was prepared for the end and went out into the great beyond with the same fearlessness that formed the chief capital of the early pioneer. For several years past Mr. Strow bridge, with two members of his family, has resided at 366 Fifth street and it was here that" death found him. last evening. While he was still an -infant his parents removed to Ohio. An ambitious youth, Strowbridge soon scqulred all the learning to be obtained in the district schools of Ohio and tt the time his parents determined to cross the plains to Oregon'' he was pre paring himself for a college course. In October Of 1861 the long Journey across the trackless prairies and moun tains was begun, the winter being passed by the emigrants at St Joseph, Mo. Early in the 'spring of 1852 the voyage waa continued, Oregon being reached the same year. Shortly after arriving iri the Willam ette Valley the father of Mr. Strow bridge died of mountain fever And the latter was left the sole guardian of the family. He soon entered the shipping and commission .business at Oregon City, then the .metropolis of the North west, and later moved to Portland, where he regularly entered his commer cial career, being the first to ship Ore gon fruit to the San Francisco market. In 1860 he entered the retail boot and shoe' trade, the house of which he wa ttre head being the first In Portland to receive its supplies direct from Boston and not through San Francisco Later he expanded his business to Include leather and findings and catered to the wholesale trade. Six weeks ago Mrs. Anna Keebler, a wealthy widow of Garfield avenue, forbade Bartlett Page, a young society man, to visit her daughter, Maud Keebler. Page met Miss Keebler at the home of friends, however, and the two. with a party -of friends, went to Trinity Episcopal Church, where the Rev. Dr. Talbot Derformed the weaamg cere mony. Then the whole happy party drove to the beautiful Keebler home, expecting to surprise the mother Into a blessing. The mother saw tne carnage ap proaching and guessed what had hap nened. As Mr. and Mrs. Page entered the. house Mrs. Keebler met them wth whip and struck about herself in K man ner indicating that sne naa no care to whom she might hit. There was a panic among the crowd that had come to Join in the couple's blessings and they fled to the sidewalk. The groom was dumbfounded and did not escape the blows of tho Angry mother, who tore' his clothes In her sneer. Mrs. Keebler is not large, but, in her excitement she completely overpowered her son-ln-law. It is not known where they are now, Tonight Mrs. Keebler says she regrets having whipped Page and "hopes to smooth it all over tomorrow and make the best of it Her sudden anger got the best of her, she says.
