t.z ' 8 THE OREGON DAILY j6tJUNALi PORTLAND, MONDAY EVEN ING, J"tJNE 8I l903. HI i TRANSACTIONS IN THE FINANCIAL WORLD SUMMER SEASON IS NOW OPENED Buying of Canned Vegetables and meats Are me rnncipai Features of Trade Plenty o ' Lemons, 1 worth the very highest quotation. A small amount of buying1 la being don, but. taken altogether, the situation In very unsatisfactory. Today"! quotations, aa revised, are as follows: PORTLAND WHOLESALE MICH. BEAT PRIMARY Extreme Warm Weathe . Causes Oregon Strawberries to Ripen and Lower Prices Ar Expected Next Week, amann xabxsts orav Tli NMn for summer goods Ui fonnsvlly opened In tne Port land wholesale diatrte And al though business is doll In some Usee it Is much livelier in others. FRONT STREET, June 8. The local ,.--. wholesalers ltave formally announced , the ope-ning of the summer season. There Is a fair and steady demand for all kinds of canned meats, vegetables and other summer delicacies. The large . Shipments of lemons lately per steamer have shown that the local commission men were not to be caught napping with the early approach of the warm weather. Supplies of all kinds of fruits, with the . exception of strawberries are sufficient to meet all the requirements of the trade. Berry Beeelpts to Increase. - The extreme warm weather of the past few days Is causing the berries throughout the state to ripen rapidly ... , and although the markets at present are rather bare of stock, still within the next . few days the receipts will show such a large Increase that prices are very likely to show a slump. Quotations are un - rChanged today. S w Zrgs Ysry Soaroe. The weather Is probably too warm for r.eavy egg laying and as, a consequence the receipts of stock In the local mar kets within the past few days have .been much too light for flie current de fmand. It Is usual at this time of the year for stock to be accumulating at a iiveiy rate ana tne shipments into coia storage generally quite heavy. ThlB , year cold storage receipts were very ' light and several times the merchants .who had placed stock took it from the storage in order to supply their trade. . Receipts of eggs today were nominal and - the Very-highest quotations are ruling. In some cases -cent advance Is being secured. t Poultry Business la Bad. The'poultry markets are heavily over . loaded with stock that had to be carried - over from Saturday on account of the mallness of demand, and, as is usual when such was the case, receipts were extra large. There Is a fair call for the younger stock, but the old hens and roosters are 'not wanted. Geese and duck demand Is off. Hogs Are Weaker. Larger receipts and smaller demand t for hogs has caused another decline in - -quotations. .. Prime beef on the street is nara to ODtain ana the highest quo tations are ruling for the small amount of stock on' hand. Bull beef is in fair demand at quotations ranging from 6V4 - '."to cents. Veal. 'lambs and -mutton STe weak. No changes occur in quotations. Potatoes Show Improvement. The local potato market shows a alight improvement, which is due solely to the fact that the shipments of stock from this city to the South per steamer have been rather small fon the two pre vious sailings. The local market, though not so active as might be ex pected under the circumstance of higher quotations, has a better undertone. , Onions a Brag on Market. All hope of reviving the onion situa tion during the present season has passed, prices have slumped to the low 'st possible level, and farmers do not care to haul the stock for the money paid. California reds are In much larger receipt and as the stock Is in first-class condition and Is sold at a fair price, the demand for the older stock has practically ceased. Quotations on new reds stand at $1 per sack. Oregon Oherrlss Arrive. A small shipment of Oregon cherries was received this morning by Glafke & Company from Southern Oregon. Re ceipts of California stock is on the Increase, and there Is plenty on hand to suit all demand at the lowered prices. , Summer Bun of Smelt. Orsla, Hour sad Fesd. On passage, decreased 664.000 bushels, against a decrease In last year of 2,840,000 bushels. Visible supply oe creased 1.817.000 bushels, against a de crease of 2,613.000 bushels a year ago. and Is now 22.711.000 bushels, against 26.091.000 last year. The market was weak early on account of fine weather throughout the West, and on lower ca bles. Later It ruled steady, in a gen eral way the cash situation is slow, but the seaboard reports moderately good business at the decline. Statistics are rather bullish, except the large world s shipments; the visible supply Is small. Northwest stocks are about 4.000.000 bushels under last year. Speculative trade was rather light. Much depends upon the Government report on Wed nesday. The concensus of opinion seems to be that It will show from 6 to 8 points lower than the previous report. The crop condition is, of course, the impor tant thing at this season, but the light stocks snd the isteness of the crop should also be taken into consideration. Estimated cars 46. More Visible Cora. The, market here was quiet and easier. . There wasaome . break ,Jn the drouth in the Middle and Eastern States, but so far there is no general relief. Wet weather In the West is much more favorable. These conditions brought about no great amount of real izing, but did check the confidence of speculative buying. Cash demand Is fair. With Improved weather in the West, an increased movement from farmers' hands is likely. Estimated cars tomorrow 450. w Too Heavy Receipts Causes Another Heavy Slump in Local Quotations, Receipts of livestock in the local yards have been so heavy lately that quotations on all lines are constantly declining on account of the poor demand now prevailing. Hog receipts are extra, heavy and prices are again declined today on Ac count of the poor demand. Cattle are coming In large lots, a majority of the stock arriving being from sections of the state where the rivers have en croached Upon the land and has left the stock without any food supply. For the most part the receipts hsve been in very poor condition, and as the hot weather has somewhat slackened the demand, quotations are again lowered. . Too Many Sheep. There is too large a supply of sheep in receipt for this period of the year and prices-, are slumping. Lambs are also weaker on account of the large supply and poorer demand.
