THE INCREASE Nearly $200,000 Short Is the Free De livery Appropriation. (Journal Special Service.) WASHINGTON, May 21. Postmaster- General Payne this afternoon made the startling announcement that there is jnow a deficiency of nearly $200,000 In the appropriation for the free delivery system. The deficiency is largely due to the increased demands for free deliv cry. He proposes to Inaugurate economic measures In other branches to offset th,e CATS WANTED FOR THE FUR THEY BEAR (Journal Special Service.) ; , L08 ANGELES, May 21. The elec tion Of Moderator is the order of busi ness before tha GenonW Assembly this afternoon, and the contest promises to be close. There are four candidates In tha field, Dr, William 11. Roberts, stated clerk of tha Assembly; Dr. Robert F. Coyle, of Denver; Dr. c,iley Schaff, of Mint Seminary, and Dr. Calvin Mateer, of China. , Dr. .'Matter Is favored by many, who bellevf the moderatorshlp should go to representative rrom Hi" roreign nciu, but as the meeting for election be&!mv It seems that pr. Coylu ami Dr.v Roberta are the most popular candidates. Had Dr. Chichester of Chicago lived he would have been next Moderator of the Assem bly, and his election was planned as a compliment to the ohuiehen of the Mid dle West. His sudden death not long ago made It necessary to find another man for the place, and Dr. Coyle la the only one suggested from the Middle West, which, it is believed, has best right this time to the honor, if the mod- eratorship is not to goto the foreign field. Dr. Henry Van Dyke, the present Moderator, is from the Par East, and his predecessor. Dr. Mlntnu, was elected from California, Dr. Roberta, through his office aa stated clerk, has made many acquaint ances among leading l'r?siyterlans, and there can be no denying the fact that he la popular. - There are. however, many things to be considered aside from the mail's personality, and there Is a strong feeling that the next Moderator should be selected from among the ranks of the Inlsters now In actual pulpit service. Dr. Roberta la not a pastor. Thouiinds of excursionists are In the city and the hotels are filled, while many of the visitors ure being enter tained in the homes of friends either here or In Pasadena. Attendance at the opening meeting has been far in excess of what the local committee anticipated, and Irflmanuel 'Church, where the chief sessions are held. Is taxed for seating room. This church recently was en larged by a substantial addition and has better accomodations for the assembly, probably, than could have been found in any other building of the city. Tomorrow will be devoted to business. both morning and afternoon being taken up with reports from special committees. The stated clerk is to speak on revision overtures and it Is expected that the proposed .changes for the articles of faith will be voted upon. While the rtlcle on predestination Is being dis cussed more than any of the others In question, much comment also Is heard regarding the section which refers to the Pope of Rome as the anti-Christ. This article la to be stricken from the creed, and the revlaors explain that they find no Bible authority for the assertion. Therefore the framers of the articles of faith must have been mistaken. This action on the part of modern Presbyterians is looked upon as a step In the direction of liberality, and many believe it will engeader a more kindly feeling between Catholics and Protes tants, bringing nearer the tlmo of gen eral church unity. The proposed creed revision stands throughout for greater lenlenoy, and another section to be dropped has for 160 years caused a mild resentment among the Quakers. 2 ItpzJy , ff jim DUmpa good dame, on wisdom bent,1 ,t ' -ii k; yf- u To frequent cooking lectures went J .
