In comparison with the splendid game of the day before yesterday's exhibi tion at the Portland National Park, was like lc cream a a chaser for a hot tamale. The contest Itself was neither good nor bad. It attained and was perpetu ated in that insipid medium between - "fair" and "poor," which alike repela the audience and the players. It Is, true oc casional streaks of fast playing were brought to light, but they did not long endure and soon went back to the ob livion from whence they came. Obviously unfair and partial scoring cut down Portland's error column by r.alf. and made Spokane play errorless ball, when Zalusky dropped a foul from the bat of "Slats" Davis, after which event that gentleman laced out for two bags. Wilson, In right field for Portland, also Juggled a ground ball long enough to allow an extra baae, while Hanley, In center for the Greens, allowed two flies to slip through his Angers that should have been gathered In by any outfielder not afraid of being fined for moving faster than a walk. Scoring that is so palpably biased will not serve the purpose for which it Is Intended or make the Pacific National League appear to play faster ball than In reality it does, for even ytie small boy on the bleachers knows enough about manipulating the error column to chalk up a black mark! after a catcher has dropped a foul fly and the batter gets his base. Delsel continued his splendid work at the third corner, and Is one of the prime favorites, while Anderson's manner and method of operating back of the platter won him carloads of praise. Both pitch ers were effective at times, but the hit ting averages of neither team are much higher than that of a group of school students. Klopf and Elsey were the life and soul of the Spokane aggregation. Both teams were probably suffering from soreness of muscles, because of the 14 innings of severe strain at the opening of the sea son. The official score, though not the" cor rect one, follows: PORTLAND. AB. R. H. PO. A. E. Delsel, 2b. Pete Lohman's "misfits." assisted by one. James McDonald, defeated the Browns yesterday by a score of 6 to X. Umpire McDonald put Jay Andrews out of the game for disputing a close decision, and Sammy Ylgneaux retired from behind the bat and endeavored to fill the "Doc's" shoes at the third station, but was slightly erratic, and as a result of his bungle and other mlsplays, the Oak landers scored four runs In the eighth inning.
