Local lard of the various grades la unchanged. "The looal dressed meat markets on Front street have been quite bare dur ing; the week." says John Toft of Toft, Ulna Co. "Receipts In all line have been very small, but demand has not in : any case been very great Pork and beef have been In smaller receipt than for some time previous, but the high prevailing prices have kept the demand down" Prices are unchanged In the .. fresh meat line during the week. Qimd Com and Boast Beef Down. A decline of 10 cent a docen has Just been made In the quotations on both canned corn and roast beef. Cream of tartar and curry . powder price have been advanced from one to three cents a pound. Various articles of woodenware, such as atepladders and tubs have been ad '. vanoed about 11 a dosan. The Srr Bltnatlon. W. T. Turner Co. say: "Eggs have been In much larger receipt during the past week and the market ha been somewhat dragging. The receipts have I been so great that local commission men were unable to move their stocks except at the lowest-prevailing quotation and in consequence prices showed a drop dur ing tbe week. There are no Alaska orders now in the local market to be filled and we do not expect them to any great extent until after the opening up of navigation In the North." Glafk A Co. shipped 800 cases of . aegs this morning to Skagway. Prices remain at. 14 and 14V cents. Poultry Clean Up. Although poultry receipts were much mora liberal during the past seven days - than they have been for several weeks previous, tbe market la entirely cleaned up of all surplus on account of the extra heavy demand. Prices during the week have been kept rather stiff and there was no weakening at any period. Potatoes Very OulL . Advice from California and Arizona tat that the potato market has gone to piece and very few sale are being mad at any price. The cause of the low prevailing quotations in the Southwest la due to the extra large crop of fairly good stock raised in California during the past season and it 1 not now ex pected that quotations will show any material advance during the prosent season. Bops ar Dollar. ' Hop are quoted duller in the Eastern markets and -as a consequence there is nothing doing la the local markets. Some of the larger growers are becoming alarmed over the long period of dullness and are making desperate efforts to unload at-about 26 and 26 cents a pound. Local representatives of Eastern brokers any, however, that they have no orders on hand, and will not buy 1902 stock at any price. - Three cars of bananas arrived on the treet today, but the fruit was so green that none of it could be used. A a result of correct lou the re sult of discrepancies in those all cash holding are expected to show a gain. Any other change will be disappointing. Observation la made that offerings of stocks do not Increase much as prices creep up. The consequence Is that the short Interest which, notwithstanding active covering early In the week, is be lieved still to be very heavy. 1 ex tremely nervous. This feeling, more over. Is intensified by the reasonably favorable earnings reported of lute by the railroads and which are beginning to overshadow such Influence as the Keene-Harrlman Imbroglio and the strikes. The Record Herald says: So far there have been 380,000 hogs received here this month of March, and If receipts the last week of the month are about the same a the first three, the total here for March will be around 626,000 hogs, compared with 797,000 here last March, 610.000 in 1901, and 693.000 in 1900. If these small fig ures are realized the receipt will be the smallest for March since 1893. In March of that year the hogs sold as high a $8.66. The lard reached $13.20. The ribs $10.62 V and pork $18.67 H In March of that year the weight of hogs averaged 220 pounds. It looked as if the average weight of the hog here this month would be the lightest since 1891. The average weight the first of this month was 211 pounds, and for- the second week 216 pounds. The March average last year ,was 16 pounds, and there has been no March average as low as that since 1892, when it was 216 pounds. The average in March, 1901, was 209 pound. Clearly enough, there is something the matter this season with the hog supply. It is clear now that the two Interests so prominent on the long side of May corn up to last week are now long on July and adding to their lines. Each day of late there has been Armour buy ing July through one set of houses, and Cudahy buying through another. The Wells crowd is supposed to have the July line which it took when It sold out the May. There now 1 about an, even i division of sentiment on corn. No one is apprehensive -of July manipulation, and so the opinion divides entirely on the question of merit at the price. Pat ten is the conspicuous bear and 1 about a active on the selling as the other two leading in this are on the buying. His Jlne, however, is not estimated a large one. He covered July corn on a large scale when the Armour and Cudahy sell ing of May took place. The May liqui dation has reduced tne July discount notably. Early In the month July was 3 cents under May. At one time yesterday it was only -cent under. The corn feature this week has been the improvement In the low grades, the No. 4 corn up, .about 3 cents and the No. 3 j up about 2 cents from the low points, while the May has merely held its own.
