Mr. Swlgert was sitting with his feet comfortably "stowed away be neath a polished desk In the general or 11c s of tha company and prior to the en trance of the newspaper man had been perusing a copy of a letter which was spread before him. Could fro Beach BeUwood. "There la only one section oz tha elty to which such a cas could not be sent," ha continued. , "Hell wood could not be reached because the track leading there la of broader guage than the regulation street railway line. It would, therefore, be Impossible to switch a car onto this road that was built to run on other linns." ' Would the City tt Suburban be willing to build such a car for use by the Postal bepartmentT" Mr. Swlgert was asked, and the following reply came quickly: . "Yes, If Uncle Sam will pay for our trouble." "What would be necessary In the way of remuneration T" "Well, that Is rather hard to aay. The operation of such a car would be differ ent In Portland from what It Is In San Kranclsco or a really large city. Here the mall Is not carried In such large quantities while the city Is scattered and covers a very large territory. It would really be hard for one car to do the work and make any saving In time. Of course a.postsl oar could meet the trains at the L'nlon Station and bring the malls direct to the main or central office. Then dis tribution to the sub-stations would be gin. There la where the trouble would lis. The car could not go several ways at once. There might even be loss of time." Government Oensrosity, Mr. Swlggert took up Uie letter from his desk and glanced hurriedly through I- . "You may wonder at my prompt state rnent that the roads would help Uncle Sam If he would pay. The truth of the matter is that your Uncle Is not over generous In matters pertaining to his Postal Department. "Here la a copy of a letter I have writ ten to the department with regard to the work we do for the Government In the matter of handling mails. We carry three malls a day from Sunnyside to Mount Tabor, for each of which we re ceive the magnificent sum of 4 2-5 cents. And the conductor uas to leave the car and carry the mall bags two blocks to the Postofflce. "When we object they tell us that we ean carry the mall for that or our patrons will be reduced to one mall a day, which would not be right, r'erhaps you can guess why I mentioned money In connec tion with the postal car project?" It le very probable that a medal of the Tillamook lighthouse station will be on exhibition at tbe St. Louis Exposi tion next year. The War Department has written Captain W. a Langfltt, United states Engineers, about the ad vlsablllty of soob an exhibit, and re questing him to ascertain the probable cost of making a model. Of course this will depend altogether upon Its slse, and the material out of which it is ex structed, but these matters are left te Captain Langfltt's judgment He has not glrea the subject much thought yet. and consequently Is unable to enter Into any details concerning the suggestions which he will recommend to the department. Tbe Tillamook lighthouse is generally regarded among sclentiflo men as being one of the nnest pieces of engineering work that was ever executed on the Pa cific coast. It would be an ornament end a credit to any section of the coun try, and for this reason a reproduction of it In cast is desired at the big can tennlal. If the government s proposed plan is carried out. It will mean a splendid advertisement for Oregon and me raoiDO nortaweet. it will be one of the rare attractions from this sec tion of the country. From Bt. Louis the model will undoubtedly be brought to Portland a year later to occupy an hon ored place among the exhibits at the Lewis and Clark Fair. FIREMEN GIVE THANKS.
