The central committee of the Twentieth Century Na tional Gospel Mission has Issued an ap peal to the Christian ministers and lead-, ers of the country for a National Len ten gospel campaign. The appeal asks that tomorrow, which Is Ash Wednes day, be set aside as a special day of hu miliation and prayer, thaj; the church buildings be opened to the public each day during Lent and the people be in vited to pray for a National and uni versal revival of Christian (religion. The committee suggests that from the day of prayer until April 10 every minister , undertake the work of personal, posi tive evangelism among the unsaved. MUNICIPAL OWNERSHIP i - (Journal Special Service.) NEW YORK, Feb. 24. Arrangements are completed for the .National confer ence for the discussion of municipal own ership and public franchises, which is to open tomorrow under the auspices of the New York Reform Club. Mayor Low will open the convention with an addrefes of welcome and John G. Alger will pre side. The program calls for a number of papers by well-known men on transporta tion, gas and electric lighting, water and telephone, the granting of franchise and the. control of public Service corporations. James. Tllton and William Levins are well known In Portland. Both men for merly lived here and have numerous acquaintances-here. They have very un enviable records. Tillon having been ac cused Of murder here, and Levins being known a consort of dissolute women. Both men were in continual trouble with the police, and the officers stated today that they sincerely hoped neither of the pair would come this way. CORNELIUS VANDERBILT (Journal Special Service.) . NEW YORK. Feb. 24. Mr. and Mrs Cornelius Vanderbllt sailed today for Europe. Abroad they will Join their yacht for a long cruise, which will end at Newport early m August, it is proo able they will spend the rest Of the sum mer cruising In American waters, com-Hia- ashore- occasionally to make visits. The physicians of Mr. Vanderbllt believe this is the best way for him to recuper ate from the effects of the illness from which he has recently recovered. COAST LINERS.
