Eskaw of Pendleton, while here yester day, made the surprising statement that the Town pf Pendleton does not levy any town tax. All the expenses of the town government are paid by the town's share of the dispensary profits. Persons liable to street duty pay a nominal tax of $2 a year and a special tax of 3 mlUs is levied for -ie support of the Public School, but no town tax whatever is levied. The streets and sidewalks are In good condition, the town has about $600 in the treasury and there la no debt I woman in Jscw Jersey. , She owns and manages Brown's Inn, an old and fam ous resort of rich New Yorkers. She Is likewise postmistress at Newfoundland, and personally supervise the business of the Offices -, According to George Estes, president Of the United Brotherhood of Railway Employes, trade unions have about out lived their usefulness. In his address In the A. O. U. W. Hall Inst evening, this wus the trend of the principal arguments he produced. "Trades unions have served a good purpose," said the speaker, "but the in dustrial union is so far superior to ft that there Is no comparison. By the Industrial union Is meant the merging of all class orders into ono general or ganization." In support of his statement Mr. Estes referred to the recent United Mlncwork- ers' strike In Pennsylvania. Until with in the past few years the miners had seven separate organizations known as trade unions of the engineers, the fire men, the slRte pickers, the pumpers, etc. "As long as the wepe divided into Classes, (continued the speaker, "every attempt they made to win concessions was met by dismal failure. Finally a new leader came into existence. His name Is John Mitchell, the greatest labor leader nnd organizer in the world to day. He saw the fallacy of having the miners divided Into separate unions, where each was being prompted by sel fish motives, and he set about to remedy the existing evlL The result of his labor was the organization of the United Mlneworkers' Union in Which no class distinctions are made. All the miners In the anthracite districts were then Interested In working for each other's interests. They then asked for a living wage, and for the first time In their history they gained their demands. Prevlqus to the formation of the one or ganization they had been trying for more than a. quarter of a. century to witter their condition. With the possible ex ception of the building trades or iron trades, lt.l3 also impossible for a class organization to win a strike." Mr. Estes spoke for almost two hours. nnd held the close attention of his aud ience. A history of the U. R. R. E.
