The compafay will use the steamer for towing logs up the river. The Cascades was built by Joseph Pacquet In 1883 at a cost, including work done by the government and out fit complete, of $88,986. Her tonnage is 227.52; length, 160 feet; beam, 28 feet and 6 Inches; depth of hold. S feet. Her boiler ia the usual steamboat fire-box type, 24 feet and 8 inche long by 5 feet diameter, with 83 tube. New residences are going ap in every direction and many ethers are being projected. Most of the houses under construction are ef a modern type, and cost In the neighborhood of $2000 each. Very few of those being erected will cost less than $1,600. The building" operations are not con fined te any section of the East Side in particular, as work is being rushed over the entire territory. Throughout Bunny aide, there Is much evidence of building. The many new -factories In that section of the city have made the demand for homes for tho workmen more acute than ever. The Portland Clothing Com pany is erecting a large plant on the grounds ef the Portland Woolen Mills Company. A large number of men will be employed at this Institution and It Is said that the management of the factory will erect a number of cosy dwellings tor the use of the employes. These will be rented at the lowest possible price. The East Side Lumber Company Is rushing the work of erection on its new mill at the foot of Spokane avenue. About 75 men will b employed at this Institution when under full operation. Many new homes will soon be needed employing a large nuraum w in operation late this spring and some thing will have to be done at once to get there accommodations. USE STEAM SHOVEL Oregon Water . Power Company - Rushing Work on New Branch, v The Oregon Water Power ft Railway Company is rushing . the construction work on its SprlngwateTTiranch through Bellwood. The company baa Its monster steam shovel at work near the old race track and fair progress is being made In the removal of the large grades through that vicinity. The dirt, from these grades will be used in the filling of the 'many low places along the route of the new road and as soon as the dirt is- removed, it is dumped Into flat cars and hauled away by horses.
