There Is very little business being transacted In the sugar line at present. " Dealers are wary and do not intend to . be caught In a declining market. They , are purchasing - only enough stock to tide them over for a few day. No large sales of sugar have been reported ataee the decline of 20 cents last week. Jobbers, too, are wary, and do not know which way tbe market will lump next. ' They say that before-the last decline the market looked quite, favorable for a steady advance. BUTTER SCARCER. A prominent ' butter man said today ' that the butter market .was stronger. Receipt are somewhat 1 smaller on ac count of the cold snap during the past - tew days.- Although -there la v scarcity to be noticed throughout the butter mar ket, the price is too high now to admit of any further advances in quotations. The best grades of creamery are selling today at SO cents a pound. , " 1 POULTRT WANTED. Receipts of poultry were slow today, and the market is about bare of stock. The demand continue quite strong, but no higher prices are anticipated. Eggs continue about the same as reported yes terday, with receipts and demand about equal Fresh Oregon eggs are today quoted at 36 cents a doxen. V - . LITTLE PORK ON STREET. There ' was very little pork received on the "street" today, and prices ' are stronger. As she screamed tn her husband,' John F. Dever- eau, a mail carrier, she fell to the floor writhing in pain, and half an hour later. in spite of the efforts of a doctor, she was dead." Mrs. 'Devereux had gone to the pantry to take a dose of cough med icine.' She mistook the cartoollo .add bot tle for her medicine bottle, and she drank a deep draught of the poison. Jfra. Devereux suffered from a severe cold twnwvr&--yw-Mr.vwcmx- spent the evening at 'home and about 10:30 o'clock they prepared to retire. Both Were partly undressed when Mrs. Dever eux thought of her cough medicine and she left the bedroom to go to the pantry for it. She took no light' The cough medicine was a compound of rock candy and' brandy, and was in a half-pint whis ky bottle. Near the bottle on the shelf was another one of the same else and shape containing carbolic acid, which she used to clean the sink. Mrs. Devereux got hold of the acid bot tle. The sea board export sales were reported by IOhrke as 64 loads, and the Harris-Gates figures were 77 loads. ' The seaboard said most of its business was to the conti nent. The balance of the cargo consists, of , 180 boxes of apples, 100 bales of hay, 100 sacks of bran, 61 boxes of salt fish, one box of fruit trees, one box of bones and several other miscellaneous items of minor importance. .: THE SEQUOIA. The steam schooner Sequoia; which has been at Supple's shipyards several days, wilt be taken on the ways today. She wilt be pulled out of the river under her own steam with the assistance of eight horses. The boiler for the Gov ernment tender being built at the same yaraa has arrived and will be installed today. But the pools, or some one, evidently bad stocks to sell rather than to buy. After the first half-hour stocks were poured into the market in quantity, care being taken, tvowever, not to break prices severely.
