The Western Central occupies the position in Seattle that our Federated Trades Coun ' ci does In Portland. ' I found a very earnest and jealous lot of delegates present from the various onions, alt of whom have the kindest and beet of feel log for our Oregon organisations. There may be soma Jealousies existing in com mere lal and -business circles between " Portland and the Sound cities, but I can - assure' our friends that no such feeling exists In trade . union circles, and Z look forward to the working out of the plan put In motion at this convention to bring r about such close relations as will prac tlcally make us one state in the labor .. . movement DEMOCRATS MEET TO HONOR JACKSON Several Handf ei Atteni the Smcker at Foresters' Hall. CHANCE FOR PORTLAND MAN Wife and Fortone Being Laid at ' Feet of a Webfoot. ; . An Ann Arbor woman is giving some nterprlsing Portland business man a chance to make a fortune and at the same time get a wife. Cora B. Randall of Ann Arbor, Mich, has written to the , Portland Board ef Trade regarding this matter. In part she says for the benefit of her Portland friends: . "I am a single lady and am engaged In the. manufacture of ladies' skirts, cor sets and tailor-made suits. I am dis pleased with Ann Arbor, both as a busi ness plaoe and as a place of residence, o desire to locate In a larger city where people do not freeze winters and take all summer to thaw. Should I settle in the West I would be pleased to have a business man to take -an interest in the business, where he would assume a part of the responsibility." Secretary Shillock Is as yet undecided BOW to answer the fair damsel. Person, ally he does not know whether the ladies of. Portland would patronize a liorae manufacturer of articles such as corsets, and the like. Cut he states that he will Visit some of his lady friends and see what they think of the proposition. - After this part of the work is accomp lished he will make a list of his gen- ; tlemen frlendsr select those who have as ,jret not assumed the responsibilities of . matrimony, and put Ann Arbor's letter before thera. After this is done he will answer the Micnlgau maiden In an . epistle couched in tho sweetest terms. To Cure a Cold in One Day Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets. The Foresters Hall was arranged with chairs acound the outside, and a large space in tire center, wherein the men could walk about and in that center space there was a table of pipes and tobacco for very one. '"'. Pave" J. Beakey, charrman of the ar rangements committee, presided. He In troduced a number of performers who gave a good .vaudeville program and re sponded to numerous encores. Light re freshments were -served, and were con sumed during the brief recess between the Introductory numbers and the few short speeches.. Upon the platform with Chairman Eeakejr were R. D. In man, Judge Gallo way, John M. Sperry, Dr. John Welch, John Jlontag, Fred V. Holman. A projectoecope machine waa used in throwlnj views upon a screen, and when the picture of Governor-elect Chamber lain appeared there was wild cheering. Mr. Beakey made excuses for Mr. Cham berlain, who was busy with his me swage. and who sent his regrets and kind wishes. Fred V. Holman was called upon by the chairman, and responded with a 'strong appeal to Democrats to let bygones be bygones, and rally to the support of the principles of true Democracy. He was vigorously applauded. -Judge Galloway of Oregon City spoke along the same line, .and Indorsed Mr. Holman's sen timer fs, referring to Mr, Chamberlain and his Incoming adminis tration, and expressing the bope that some day Oregon would send "some Hol man. or some Bennett, or some Cham berlain to the-United' States Senate." For the latter" expression, he received thunderous applause. Charles Oalloway followed. He Is a member of the House, from Yamhill County, and gave a "rattling good" speech, discussing Andrew Jackson and tho Democracy in rather brilliant manner. He was applauded to the echo. Dr. Welch responded to a call and excused himself from speaking, briefly expressing his sympathy with the other Democrats present and"' hoping, there would be other such meetings. Senator fiweek was demanded by gen eral calls from the audience, and replied In a few pertinent sentences, after which the meeting was brought to, a close.
